Registered Nurse - Observation (Travel/Contract)
Location: Olympia, Washington
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)

Job Description
- Role: Observation Registered Nurse (OBS RN)
- Floating required: Must regularly float between similar units within skill set
- Patient types: Surgical procedures requiring overnight stays, procedural observation patients, medical observation patients, some medical inpatient, and some long length of stay patients
- Ratios: 1:4 (day), 1:5 (night and weekends)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (EOW)
- On-call: Not required
- Block scheduling: Not available
- Local candidates within 50 miles are not eligible for this travel contract
- Pending licenses are not accepted
- Return to office (RTO) restrictions: None, but preference to keep under 7 days
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington
- Minimum 1 year of experience in Direct Observation Unit (DOU) within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation
- Must be able to float between like units as needed
Certifications (as applicable)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation certification only
- Other certifications may be required based on unit or clinical track (e.g., ACLS, PALS, NRP, EFM) - verify with clinical track if applicable
Background and Compliance Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
- Social Security Card (as applicable for I9 and state requirements)
- Background check within 90 days covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years; must be updated annually
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start, updated monthly
- Education verification required for all candidates (nursing degree verification for RNs)
- State-specific searches and registry checks as required by Washington state law
- References: Minimum 2 references covering 1 year of employment within last 3 years in a comparable specialty/setting
- Employment application covering at least last 5 years of employment with explanations for gaps or overlaps
Health and Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, NP, PA, or DO, indicating ability to work with or without accommodation
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination accepted)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer or declination)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer or declination)
- Hepatitis B (vaccination series or signed declination)
- Seasonal Flu vaccine during flu season or declination
- COVID-19 vaccination record preferred; declinations accepted with adherence to masking policies
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months, updated annually
- Fit mask test (respirator fit testing) required for travel candidates, updated annually
- Respiratory safety clearance required annually for travel candidates
Competency and Skills
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required annually
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification or assessment required for Labor & Delivery RNs if applicable
Additional Notes
- Badge photo required (passport style with neutral background)
- EPIC charting system used
- No on-call duties currently required
- No block scheduling accommodations available
- Candidates must comply with floating policy acknowledging potential float to other nearby facilities
- Return candidates with less than 90-day gap may have some requirements waived (e.g., background check, annual modules)
This position offers a travel contract opportunity for RNs with at least 1 year of experience, requiring flexibility to float between units and work every other weekend on day shifts. Candidates must meet comprehensive background, health, and certification requirements to ensure compliance with state and facility standards.
