ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours

Job Description

  • Work as part of a Critical Care Float Pool covering weekend night shifts (2 out of every 4 weekends).
  • Float to various ICUs based on staffing and patient acuity, including:
    • Neuro ICU
    • Surgical ICUs
    • Medical ICUs (MICU x2)
    • Cardiology/Diagnostics
    • CVICU
    • SICU / MICU / NCCU
  • Float policy requires floating within units of equivalent or lower acuity.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio.
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS issued by the American Heart Association.
    • BLS issued by the American Heart Association.
    • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification.
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system.
  • Experience with telemetry monitoring.
  • Experience with ventilator management.
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement.

Compliance and Background Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (must be completed within 1 year of start).
  • Fingerprinting must be done using specific Ohio codes and may require Fast Fingerprints location or mail-in packet depending on candidate location.
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start.
  • Education must be from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene).
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and freedom from contagious disease.
  • Required immunizations and/or titers:
    • Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for measles, mumps, and rubella
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
    • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination with mask requirement during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31)
  • COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended but not required.

Competency and Testing Requirements

  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%).
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exams may be required.

Additional Requirements

  • 2 professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leadership role.
  • Must comply with dress code and hand hygiene policies.
  • Completion of Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate prior to start and updated annually.
  • Annual review and acknowledgment of ethics and compliance policies.
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually.

This travel ICU RN role offers night shifts in a critical care float pool with exposure to multiple ICU specialties. Candidates must have at least 2 years of ICU experience, required certifications, and proficiency with EPIC. Compliance with extensive background checks, immunizations, drug screening, and competency exams is mandatory.
