Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Ortho/Neuro Unit
Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), typically 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
Holiday Requirement: Work holidays as needed based on unit staffing
Unit Details
- MedSurg Ortho/Neuro unit with 21 beds (7 private, 7 semi-private rooms)
- Patient types include orthopedic and neurological cases such as spinal surgeries, burr holes, seizures, brain stimulator patients, and traction for hips
- Telemetry monitoring is used remotely; nurses must have basic arrhythmia knowledge and be able to recognize fatal rhythms (reading strips is done by permanent staff)
- IV drips limited to Heparin or Protonix; no titrating of cardiac or other IV drips
- Respiratory support includes BiPAP, CPAP, and High Flow oxygen
- Hospitalist and Respiratory Therapist available in-house 24/7
- Pharmacy services available 24/7 via Omnicell
- No dedicated IV team; B-Braun supplies used
- Floating limited to MedSurg units only; no floating to ED or Behavioral Health
Staffing & Ratios
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 1:5 to 1:6 on both day and night shifts
- Charge Nurse coverage 24/7 (day shift charge nurse assists with admissions and discharges from 7 AM to 7 PM)
- Nurse aides (Patient Care Technicians) support nursing staff
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation: 1 shift with a preceptor, plus required Net Learning Modules and EPIC training
- Scheduling: Use Kronos for schedule requests; requests entered at least 2 weeks in advance for 4-week blocks
- Block scheduling allowed if included in contract; night shifts usually scheduled in blocks
Dress Code & Appearance
- Scrubs: Navy blue with navy or white jacket; undershirt white or navy
- Hair must be natural color (no unnatural colors like pink or blue)
- Excessive or distasteful tattoos must be covered
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA) required
- ACLS preferred
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) knowledge required
- Basic arrhythmia knowledge required
Additional Submission Requirements
- Candidates can only submit to one position at a time within the system
- Driver’s license address must be more than 50 miles from the facility
- Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years before reapplying
- Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years after completing a full year on the unit
- Background disclosures required at time of submission
- Submittals must include an unexpired copy of the candidate’s driver’s license
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license appropriate for West Virginia
- Experience in MedSurg, Orthopedics, or Neurology preferred (years of experience not explicitly stated)
