Registered Nurse - BMT (Hematology)

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day (4x10 hours), 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM
Hours per Week: 40


Job Description

  • Hematology experience required.
  • Responsibilities include triaging phone calls, managing patient messages, supporting clinic operations, administrative support, pre-authorizations, FMLA processing, and medication refills.
  • Floating to other units as needed.
  • Weekend work required on an as-needed basis.
  • Virtual orientation on Friday; onsite reporting starts Monday.
  • Start date: ASAP, with options available through mid-July.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut.
  • Minimum 2 years of Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Hematology experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Facility & Work Environment

  • Short Term Acute Care facility.
  • Level I Trauma Center.
  • Uses Epic for charting.
  • Scrub color: Royal blue.
  • Parking cost: $125/month.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months prior to start; must include SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, national criminal, federal extended, and education verification.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
  • Foreign equivalency education evaluation required for internationally educated candidates.
  • Verification of highest education level required; official transcripts may be requested.
  • Employment application with 7-year work history and no gaps over 90 days.
  • Work history verification for last 7 years required.
  • One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU; otherwise, standard references apply.
  • Skills checklist required within 12 months of start.
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain units (not specifically BMT but may apply if floated).

Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (AHA or ARC).
  • ONS certification.
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI, NIH Stroke Certification, and other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment; verify unit-specific requirements.
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required within 12 months prior to start; must score 85%.
  • Color Blind Testing required for all candidates starting on or after 8/2/2024; must score 80% or higher.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for RNs in telemetry, ICU, ER, and other specified units.
  • Language Services Training required.
  • CAUTI Education Training required except for PICU, NICU, and Psychiatry/Behavioral Health.
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training required.
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module required except for ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, and NICU.
  • Stroke Education, CLABSI Prevention, Preventing Pressure Injury, Patient Transportation with Oxygen, Pyxis ES MedStation, Baxter Pump Interoperability, Patient Bedside Rounding, Ventricular Assist Device Awareness, AME Blood Administration, New Employee Orientation, 21st Century Cures Act, ED Handbook, eCart Training, Chaperone Policy Training, Fire Safety Module required as applicable.
  • EPIC testing encouraged for those with prior experience; onsite training provided if not completed.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start; must be clean-shaven for testing.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required.
  • Annual TB questionnaire required.
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (or declination within 1 year)
    • Varicella
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31).
  • COVID vaccination series preferred.
  • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for pediatric specialties, labor and delivery, postpartum (declination acceptable).

Additional Notes

  • Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval.
  • Guaranteed hours.
  • Candidates must complete various training modules and attestations, often via electronic signature.
  • Some certifications and trainings are unit-specific; verify based on assignment.
  • Background checks and verifications must be current and compliant with facility standards.
