Registered Nurse (Neuro Stepdown & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit)
Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (3 shifts/week, 12 hours each)
Unit Overview
- Neuro Stepdown & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) with 31 total beds (25 Stepdown, 6 EMU)
- Nurse-to-patient ratio:
- Stepdown: 1:3
- EMU floor: 1:5-6
- Higher acuity neuroscience patients including stroke, seizures, craniotomies, and patients with external ventricular drains (EVDs)
- Charge nurse available 24/7
- Nurse aides present with a ratio of 1:8-9 (4 aides per shift)
- Respiratory therapists available 24/7; RNs are not required to have ventilator experience
- Telemetry monitoring present; RNs do not have to interpret strips
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license appropriate for West Virginia
- BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required at time of submission
- ACLS certification preferred
- Strong neuro nursing experience with history of caring for stroke patients and implementing NIHSS
- EPIC electronic medical record experience required
- Must be Stepdown qualified RN
Clinical Skills & Responsibilities
- Care for higher acuity neuroscience patients including stroke, seizures, craniotomy, and EMU patients
- Manage patients post-TPA (24 hours post-TPA patients managed by permanent staff)
- Titration of drips generally by physician orders; some protocols may allow RN titration with education
- Common drips include: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Nipride, Ketamine, Lasix, Bumex, Insulin
- Possible floating to other units (7E, 7W, 7NE, or 10W)
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Night shifts, typically 3 shifts in a row allowed but not guaranteed
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 2 weekend shifts per schedule
- Holiday work required as part of rotation
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts on unit (12-hour night shifts, weekends, holidays as scheduled)
- Dress code: Royal Blue scrubs
Additional Requirements & Notes
- Fully COVID-19 vaccinated (2 doses Moderna/Pfizer or 1 dose J&J) or approved medical/religious exemption required
- Driver’s license address must be outside a 50-mile radius from the facility
- Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years before reapplying
- Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years after 1 full year of travel at this facility
- Only one submission allowed at a time across the system; travel teams must be submitted together
- Disclosure of any license issues required at time of submission
