Registered Nurse – MICU (Columbus, Ohio)
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Unit: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
- Shift: Night (3 shifts of 12 hours; 19:00–7:30)
- Schedule: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts possible, with assignments reviewed every 4 weeks (subject to staffing needs)
- Patient Population: Adults and Geriatrics
- Common Patient Diagnoses:
- Oncologic emergencies
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Pneumonia
- Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
- Gastrointestinal bleed
- Neuromuscular disease
- Drug overdose
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Autoimmune disorders
- Sepsis
- Special Procedures/Unit Details:
- Mechanical ventilation
- Pulmonary artery catheter placement
- Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
- Arterial pressure and cardiac monitoring
- Chest tubes and central venous catheters
- Chemotherapy administration
- Complex medication regimens and clinical trials
- Plasmapheresis
- Bronchoscopy and endoscopy for pulmonary and GI conditions
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum 2 years of experience in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), with at least some experience within the last year
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Current ACLS certification
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Proficiency in mechanical ventilation management (ventilator experience)
- Experience with Epic electronic medical record system
Licensure
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Ohio
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including:
- Social Security Trace
- Counties lived/worked
- Nationwide search
- Sex offender registry
- Motor Vehicle Record (if driving required)
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start using specific code (3701.881)
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending
- Subcontractors must complete additional background acknowledgements and fingerprint proof
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive
- TB questionnaire in lieu of annual TB test renewal
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola, Mumps, and Rubella
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (signed declination acceptable)
- 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31) with mask requirement if declined
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended
Competency and Testing Requirements
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exam required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)
References and Documentation
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership (charge RN acceptable as second reference)
- Employment application required, including education verification for nursing candidates
- Skills checklist required
Additional Facility Policies
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required
- Confidential Fraud, Waste, Abuse, and Compliance Reporting acknowledgment and training certificate required (updated annually)
