Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Oncology

Location: Aurora, Colorado
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Surgical Oncology (Medical-Surgical Oncology)
  • Shift: Rotating shifts including Night (3x12 hours, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM) and Day (3x12 hours, 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
  • Hours per week: 36
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: Typically 1:6, may flex based on staffing and unit needs
  • Charting system: Epic
  • Unit beds staffed: 36
  • Scrub color: Navy
  • Floating: Required within scope; may float to sister facilities as needed
  • Weekend work: Required as per unit needs
  • On-call: Not required

Specialty & Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Oncology
  • Required experience: Minimum 2 years acute care experience
  • Teaching hospital experience required if this is your first travel assignment
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required; first-timers accepted with teaching hospital experience

Patient Population & Care Focus

  • Patient diagnoses primarily related to abdominal or pelvic cancers (Gynecologic Oncology, Colorectal, Pancreatic, Liver, Stomach)
  • Unit cares for patients with known cancer diagnoses requiring surgical interventions
  • No chemotherapy or biotherapy administered on this unit; chemo certification not required
  • Nursing care focuses on achieving post-operative milestones for discharge

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Colorado RN license or Compact RN license
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA or RQI accepted)

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Drivers License/State ID (clear copies front/back)
  • E-Verify or Attestation
  • Proof of legal name change if applicable
  • 7-year background check including SSN trace, Colorado CBI, education verification (accredited nursing school), and other federal/state checks
  • Education verification or transcript/diploma (accredited by CCNE or ACEN)
  • NURSYS verification for RN license within 60 days of start
  • Colorado CAPS check results within 60 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, DO, NP, or PA (not Chiropractor)
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start (specific approved masks required)
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • TDAP vaccine within 10 years or signed declination within 1 year
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, with annual TB questionnaire if positive
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunity via titer or vaccines
    • Hepatitis B immunity or vaccine series or declination
    • Varicella immunity via titer or vaccines
  • COVID vaccine proof or signed declination (acceptable vaccines: AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna)
  • Drug testing within 30 days of start and annually (specific drug panel required)
  • Color blindness testing: Ishihara exam required prior to start (online testing not accepted)

Competency & Skills Requirements

  • Annual skills checklist and competencies including:
    • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for Med/Surg and ICU-type units)
    • Core competency exams (Parts I, II, III)
    • OSHA mandatory training
  • Oncology skills checklist required annually

Additional Notes

  • Maximum of 10 RTO (Return to Office) days approved, with blackout periods during specific dates in 2026
  • Candidates must be comfortable working with flexible nurse-to-patient ratios and floating as needed
  • Facility is a teaching hospital environment

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Colorado
  • Minimum 2 years of Surgical Oncology experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Acute Care experience
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association

This position is ideal for RNs with acute care experience interested in surgical oncology nursing in a teaching hospital setting, comfortable with rotating shifts and flexible staffing.
