Registered Nurse (RN) – Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)
Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Unit: Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)
- Beds: 30 total (14 private, 16 semi-private)
- Patient Ratios: Goal 1:4; typically 1:5; occasionally 1:6
- EMR System: Sunrise
- Telemetry Monitors: Nihon Kohden
- Common Patient Diagnoses: Chest pain, rule out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post pacemaker, pre/post cardiac catheterization care, groin checks, intermediate care acuity overflow patients, Tikosyn therapy management
- Respiratory Equipment: Managed by Respiratory Therapists (RT) (AirVo high flow, Respironics BiPAP)
- Hospital Support: Hospitalist in-house 24/7, Intensivist in ICU 24/7, residents in-house 24/7
- IV Team: In-house 24/7, including PICC/Midline team; IV team performs all IV starts
- Respiratory Therapy: RT coverage 24/7
- Pharmacy: In-house 24/7 with Pyxis system
Shift & Scheduling
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
- Shift Start Time: Must be ready on unit by 6:45 AM/PM
- Shift Type: Night shift (36 hours/week)
- Weekend Requirement:
- Nights: 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule
- Days: 4 weekend day shifts per 4-week schedule; no true straight day shifts without night shifts (minimum 3 night shifts per 4 weeks required if working days)
- Holidays: Flexibility required; holiday shifts usually covered by permanent staff
- Self-scheduling allowed with 4 requested days off per month
- Floating: Required to float to Telemetry or MedSurg units as needed (ratios up to 1:6, occasionally 1:7 in MedSurg)
Orientation
- Day 1: Approximately 4 hours with HR, then 8 hours on unit with preceptor
- Day 2: On unit with preceptor
- After Day 2: Independent practice
Required Certifications & Skills
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips (despite Tele Tech support)
- Must be able to titrate drips including: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitro, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
- Must manage radial bands and remove them post cardiac catheterization (sheaths are not removed by nurses)
Dress Code
- Scrubs: Navy blue top and bottom, navy scrub jackets; no hoodies
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license for West Virginia
- Must have an unexpired driver’s license (submission requires copy)
- Disclosure of any licensing issues at time of submission
Additional Notes
- Charge nurses take full patient assignments on both day and night shifts
- Clinical assistants work 2 twelve-hour shifts on the floor and 2 eight-hour shifts in the office
- Nurse aides typically assigned with ratios of 1:10-12
This position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable with telemetry, intermediate care patients, and titrating drips in a fast-paced environment with 24/7 multidisciplinary support.
