Registered Nurse (RN) – Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)
Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Intermediate Care Unit with 30 beds (14 private, 16 semi-private)
- Patient types include chest pain, rule out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post pacer, pre/post cardiac caths (manage radial bands & remove but do not pull sheaths), groin checks, overflow intermediate care acuity patients, and Tikosyn therapy patients
- Rarely manage chest tubes
Shift Details
- 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM (Days)
- Must be on unit and ready by 6:45 AM/PM
- Self-scheduling allowed with 4 requested days off per month
- Weekend shifts include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- Day shift nurses must work at least 3 night shifts per 4-week schedule (nights are the only straight shifts)
- Night shift nurses work 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule
- Flexibility required for holiday shifts, though holidays are usually covered by permanent staff
Staffing & Ratios
- Goal nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4; typically 1:5, occasionally 1:6
- Charge nurses take full patient assignments on both day and night shifts
- Clinical assistants work 2 twelve-hour shifts on the floor and 2 eight-hour shifts in the office
- 2-3 CNAs per shift with ratios of 1:10-12
- Floating required into Telemetry or MedSurg units as needed (ratios up to 1:6, possibly 1:7 in MedSurg)
Certifications & Skills Required
- BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications required
- Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips (Tele Techs available but RN responsibility)
- Ability to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetolol, Nitro, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
- Must be able to manage care in an intermediate acuity setting
Equipment & Support
- Telemetry monitors: Nihon Kohden
- Respiratory equipment managed by Respiratory Therapists (RT) 24/7 (AirVo high flow, Respironics BiPAP)
- Hospitalist in-house 24/7; Intensivist in ICU 24/7; Residents in-house 24/7
- IV team available 24/7 for all IV starts, including PICC/Midline team
- Pharmacy available 24/7 with Pyxis system
Orientation
- First day: 4 hours with HR, then 8 hours on unit with preceptor
- Second day: On unit with preceptor
- After orientation, nurse works independently
Dress Code
- Navy blue scrubs (top, bottom, and scrub jackets)
- No hoodies allowed
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license for West Virginia
- BLS, ACLS, NIHSS certifications
- Valid, unexpired driver’s license (must be submitted with application)
- Disclosure of any licensing issues at time of submission
Additional Notes
- Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule for candidate submissions
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
