Registered Nurse (RN) – Observation Unit
Location: South Charleston, West Virginia
Unit: 3 Pavilion / 3 T - Pulmonary & Observation
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (6:45 am – 7:15 pm)
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36
Unit Details
- 32 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6
- Patient population: Adult and geriatric with respiratory diagnoses and medical conditions
- Trachs cared for by RN (on Trach Collar or Room Air, not ventilated)
- Monitor techs available 24/7; RNs review cardiac strips each shift
- Charge nurse role may be assigned to traveler if interested and cross-trained
- Nurse aides available with ratios: 1:10 (7 am–7 pm), 1:15 (7 pm–7 am)
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow O2, specialty beds, IV pumps, sequential compression devices, pulse oximetry
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license
- BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Experience required: Med-Surg, Telemetry, critical drip management, trach care
- Preferred experience: Peritoneal dialysis
- Strong cardiac nursing background preferred
- Prior travel nursing experience required
Clinical Responsibilities
- Titrate drips including Heparin, Cardizem (up to 15 mg/hr), Lasix, low-dose Dopamine (renal perfusion), Amiodarone
- Review cardiac monitor strips each shift
- Provide trach care (non-vented)
- May be required to float to Med-Surg units or Emergency Department to care for boarded patients
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Block scheduling allowed with manager approval
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend on a set rotation
- Holiday coverage on a rotating basis with core staff
- Dress code: Navy scrubs for RNs; solid colors only, no embroidery or patterns; closed-toe shoes required (no crocs)
- Orientation includes hospital and nursing orientation, computer training, and two 12-hour precepted shifts
- Initial skills checklist due within 90 days of start date
Additional Notes
- Charge nurse may have modified patient assignment (usually 2 patients)
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Floating priority given to float pool nurses before rotation to other units
