Job Opportunity: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Travel/Contract
Location
- Rochester, New York
Position Details
- Specialty: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: 4 rotating weekend shifts per month
- On Call: Required
- Charting System: Must be proficient in EPIC
- First-time travelers accepted
- Local candidates accepted within a 50-mile radius
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Valid Respiratory Therapist license in New York
- Minimum 1 year of Respiratory Therapist experience within the last year
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- Experience in a Long Term Care setting
- Proficient in airway management including:
- Extubation
- Intubation Assist
- Experience with respiratory support devices and techniques including:
- T-piece
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
- CPAP
- Proficient in EPIC charting system
Skills & Competencies
- Adult Critical Care and Emergency Department experience
- Proficient in airway management including:
- Extubation, Intubation Assist
- Nasal and Oral airway placement and suctioning
- Suctioning (ETT, NT)
- Tracheostomy care and management
- Experience with respiratory support devices and techniques:
- Hand held nebulizers, T-piece, Trach collar, Bag and mask ventilation
- ET Tube management
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
- BiPAP, CPAP
- Troubleshooting high pressure alarms
- Weaning from mechanical ventilation
- Experience in long-term care settings
- Patient diagnoses commonly encountered:
- Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Pneumonia
- Respiratory Failure and Respiratory Infections
- Special procedures and unit responsibilities:
- Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) sampling
- Ventilator management
- Patient assessment skills
- Medication administration
- Pulmonary hygiene
- Familiarity with equipment such as Hamilton Ventilator, Servo-U, NKV330, V60
Health and Compliance Requirements
Candidates must complete the following health-related requirements and lab work within 5 days of signing the contract:
- Physical exam (within 1 year, updated annually)
- Fit mask test (annual; acceptable masks include Halyard duckbill 1870+, 1860 Regular, 1860 Small)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year)
- TB questionnaire (in lieu of annual TB test renewal)
- Immunizations or positive titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive titer, completed series, or declination)
- Varicella
- Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination (required during flu season)
- Drug screening within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, opiates, etc.)
- Snellen eye exam (within 1 year)
- COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required
Background and Verification Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
- 7-year criminal background check (including felony checks)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 3 months of start, updated monthly
- Education verification from primary source (required; hard copies not accepted)
- Foreign equivalency education evaluation if applicable
- Transcript/diploma verification if no education verification on file
- Employment application and work history verification (minimum 2 past employments)
- References (2 within 3 years) required for certain candidates
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as required by profession
- Color blindness testing (one-time)
- Facility-specific documents including photo for badge and parking pass form
Additional Notes
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required
- Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
- Some certifications such as ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM, NIH Stroke Certification may be required depending on unit description
- Candidates will receive facility-specific modules and instructions prior to start
- Fingerprinting and additional background checks may be required for certain units (Mental Health, Behavioral Health, Home Health Aide, LTC)
This position offers a specialized respiratory therapy role with night shifts and weekend rotations, requiring strong critical care skills and proficiency with advanced respiratory equipment and procedures. First-time travel therapists are welcome to apply.
