Registered Nurse – Med Surg Telemetry (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 19:00–7:30)
Hours per Week: 36


Job Description

  • Work in a high-acuity Med Surg Telemetry unit with oncology patient population (oncology experience preferred but not required).
  • Floating assignments include Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), Acute Leukemia, Hematology, Medical Oncology, PCU Oncology, Gynecological Oncology, Urology, Colorectal, Surgical Oncology, and Corrections Healthcare.
  • Emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.
  • Staffing ratios: PCU typically 1:3 (can be 1:4 with mixed acuity), Med Surg Telemetry ideally 1:4 (can be 1:5).
  • Orientation includes one week of Monday–Friday day shifts followed by five bedside orientation shifts over weeks 2 and 3 before working independently.
  • Shift assignments may rotate between days and nights based on unit needs, reviewed every 4 weeks but not guaranteed.
  • Scheduling is self-requested and balanced by management; no set/blocked schedules.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Background and Credentialing Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide search, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if driving is required. FBI and BCI fingerprinting required with specific Ohio codes; must be completed within 1 year of start.
  • Education verification: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
  • NURSYS license verification required within 30 days of start.
  • Employment application, skills checklist, and 2 professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership).

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive. TB questionnaire required annually in lieu of TB test.
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required:
    • Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12; no declinations except with restrictions)
    • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, and Rubella (boosters required if low titer)
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (signed declination acceptable)
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31); decliners must wear masks.
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending results allowed).
  • Annual fit mask test required for inpatient/patient-facing roles starting 7/13/2026 and beyond; onsite fit testing available if needed.

Additional Facility Policies and Requirements

  • Candidates must review and sign dress code and hand hygiene policies.
  • Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse reporting training and acknowledgment required prior to start and annually.
  • Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and acknowledged annually for new contracts starting 11/7/2024 and beyond.
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start.

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
  • Floating to multiple oncology and med-surg units with variable acuity and patient populations.
  • Orientation and scheduling are structured to support transition and flexibility.
