Job Opportunity: MICU Registered Nurse

Location: Seattle, Washington
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts of 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
  • Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years as a Registered Nurse
  • Preferred Background: Strong preference for medical ICU experience and comfort with end-of-life care
  • Weekend Requirement: Yes (unless schedule states otherwise)
  • Floating: Floating within the hospital required; no floating to sister hospitals
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated unless specifically stated
  • Locals Accepted: Yes
  • Pending License: Not accepted
  • Return to Office Restrictions: 7 days off in November/December; must work 2 of 3 holidays during this period

Patient Population & Care Focus

  • Patients include medical and oncology ICU cases with conditions such as:
    • Adult respiratory distress syndrome
    • Multi-system organ failure
    • Septic shock
    • GI bleeding
    • Complicated pregnancy
    • Oncology
    • Renal failure
    • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Patients are in all phases of transplant needs
  • Emphasis on family-centered care

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in Washington
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), with MICU experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Compliance & Background Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 45 days of start
  • Must include checks for counties, nationwide, sex offender registry, and state-specific databases
  • Education verification required (diploma/transcript acceptable)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
  • WA WATCH search required for Washington state

Competency Requirements

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (minimum 80% in dosage calculations)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (required for ICU units)
  • General competency exam required

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (required by agency)
  • Fit mask test within 9-12 months of start (3M N95 preferred; PAPR available if fit test failed)
  • Tdap vaccine within 10 years or signed declination (with understanding of furlough if communicable disease contracted)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; declination process available
  • Hepatitis B: Documentation of vaccine series and positive titer or signed declination required
  • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; history of disease not accepted
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption/declination required during flu season (Sept-April)
  • COVID vaccination or declination required for tracking

Additional Facility Requirements

  • EPIC electronic health record system used for charting
  • Scrubs: Any color allowed; scrubs provided for OR personnel
  • Parking: Approximately $10.26 daily
  • Photo ID for badge required (DMV style photo, no selfies)
  • Completion of facility-specific agreements and checklists prior to start
  • Suicide prevention training required for multi-state licensed nurses working in Washington
  • EPIC/Alaris integration video and attestation required before starting
  • Performance evaluation requested at end of assignment (Montlake location)

Notes

  • In case of low census, providers may be called off without charge or placed on-call for up to one shift’s hours in a two-week cycle
  • The unit cares for complex ICU patients including oncology and transplant cases, requiring strong critical care skills and comfort with end-of-life situations
  • Prior travel experience is strongly preferred but not mandatory

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Magnet-designated, teaching hospital with a Level Trauma center designation, providing care to a diverse and critically ill patient population.
