Description

Registered Nurse – Acute Care Float Pool (Travel/Contract)

Location: Seattle, Washington
Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per week: 36 hours


Job Description

  • Float nurse position covering all acute care units, rehab, and boarding areas within the hospital.
  • Resource team travelers will float to Emergency Department (ED), Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), or other boarding areas to care for boarding patients.
  • Night shift ratios: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients.
  • Floating may involve changing units multiple times during a 12-hour shift.
  • Patient populations include gynecology, urology, oncology, medical-surgical, bone marrow transplant, cardiac surgery, telemetry, neuro, rehab, transplant, short stay, and boarding units.
  • Weekend work required on an as-needed basis.
  • No call responsibilities.
  • Locals accepted; first-time travelers not accepted.
  • Return-to-office (RTO) restrictions aim for minimum 6 days off between shifts to maximize scheduling flexibility, with stricter limits during peak summer and winter holiday periods.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington State.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum 3 years of telemetry nursing experience, with telemetry experience within the last year.
  • Acute care nursing experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation includes exposure to 5 different units over 3 shifts (12 hours each).
  • Required to watch EPIC/Alaris infusion pump integration video and complete attestation prior to starting.
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required, with minimum 80% in dosage calculations.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for acute care float pool nurses.
  • Additional unit-specific certifications may be required (e.g., ACLS, PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM) depending on assignment.

Compliance & Background Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 45 days of start.
  • Must pass EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, sex offender, and state-specific searches.
  • Education verification required; diploma/transcript acceptable for RNs.
  • Social Security card required if used on I-9.
  • Washington State WATCH search required.
  • Performance evaluation requested at end of assignment.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam signed by a physician within 1 year of start (required by agency).
  • Fit mask test (N95 or PAPR) within 9-12 months of start; on-site PAPR testing available if needed.
  • Tdap vaccine within 10 years or signed declination.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframe.
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; declinations accepted with education.
  • Hepatitis B: Documentation of vaccine series and positive titer or signed declination required.
  • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; history of disease not accepted.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption/declination required during flu season.
  • COVID vaccination or declination required for tracking.
  • 10-panel drug screen within one year of start (required by agency).

Additional Facility Requirements

  • Photo for badge (DMV style, no selfies) due Monday prior to start.
  • Completion of facility-specific agreements and checklists prior to start.
  • Suicide prevention training required for multi-state licensed nurses working in Washington.
  • UW email setup and learning modules must be completed before start.
  • Hepatitis B declination and flu vaccination declination require signed forms on file.
  • Umbilical cord blood collection training required for Labor & Delivery nurses.

Notes

  • No floating to sister hospitals.
  • Block scheduling not accommodated unless otherwise stated.
  • Scrub color is flexible; scrubs provided for OR personnel.
  • Charting system: EPIC.
  • Parking cost approximately $10.26 daily.

This position is ideal for experienced acute care RNs comfortable with floating across multiple high-acuity units during night shifts in a large teaching hospital environment.
