Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg/Infectious Disease

Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts (1900-0730)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun for nights)
Holiday Requirement: Based on unit needs; travelers may be expected to work holidays if permanent staff coverage is insufficient


Unit & Patient Population

  • Unit: 1E MedSurg/Infectious Disease
  • 18 beds, all private rooms due to infectious disease precautions
  • Patient types include Infectious Disease, Isolation, COVID, MRSA, C-Diff, etc.
  • Typical nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:5-6; 1:4 if COVID positive
  • Staffing: 3-4 RNs per shift, plus 2 CNAs per shift
  • No ventilators on unit; patients may be on CPAP, BiPAP, or high flow oxygen managed by Respiratory Therapy
  • Remote telemetry monitoring from another floor; RNs do not interpret cardiac strips
  • Charge nurse coverage 24/7; night charge nurse always takes a full patient assignment

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license
  • BLS (AHA) certification
  • Prior travel experience required
  • EPIC electronic health record experience required
  • Strong knowledge of MedSurg nursing, infectious disease protocols, and isolation precautions
  • Must submit an unexpired driver’s license with application

Clinical Responsibilities & Skills

  • No cardiac drip titration required
  • Common IV drips include Heparin and typical MedSurg medications such as antibiotics
  • Floating required; travelers float first to any MedSurg units and may float to Telemetry with patients within skillset

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Orientation: 1 day EPIC training, 1 day floor orientation with preceptor, then independent on 3rd day
  • Scheduling: Permanent staff self-schedule; travelers scheduled as needed with some block scheduling flexibility
  • Lunch break: 30 minutes during 12-hour shift

Dress Code

  • Royal blue scrubs required
  • Scrub jackets allowed only if royal blue scrub jackets (no hoodies or sweatshirts)

  • Call or standby may be required depending on contract and census; details to be discussed with recruiter
