Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg Level 8
Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Unit & Patient Information
- Unit size: 48 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:5-7
- Night shift: 1:6-8
- Common patient diagnoses: Pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status (AMS), GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness
- Charge Nurse coverage:
- Day shift: 2 charge nurses, both take patient assignments
- Night shift: Usually 2 charge nurses; if only 1, they do not take patient assignments
- Patient care tech (PCT) to patient ratio: Approximately 1:10-12 (may be higher)
- PCT duties include vitals, blood glucose monitoring (BGM), EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning
Required Qualifications
- Active RN license
- BLS certification
- Minimum 1 year of MedSurg nursing experience (higher experience requirement applies)
- First-time travel nurses are accepted (no prior travel experience required)
- Must include a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with submission
- Any licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission
Clinical Responsibilities
- RN drip titration: Yes, with exceptions (no cardiac drip titration)
- Common drips: Heparin, Bumex, Lasix
- Respiratory therapy equipment:
- RT staff administer breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, and manage BiPAP, CPAP, and high flow O2
- RNs monitor respiratory equipment but are not required to perform treatments
- Telemetry monitoring:
- Telemetry techs monitor and interpret strips remotely
- RNs are not expected to read or interpret telemetry strips
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Shift schedule: 7am–7pm for RNs; 6am–6pm for CNAs
- No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule created by manager with consideration for requested time off
- Rotating shifts typically arranged as 2 weeks days followed by 2 weeks nights (if applicable)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: May be included in holiday rotation for RNs; PCTs work holidays only if scheduled
- No call or standby requirements
- Floating: May float to other MedSurg, MedSurg-Telemetry, or Intermediate Care units for lower acuity patients
- Scrub colors:
- RN: Navy blue
- PCT: Ceil blue
- Secretaries: Black and pink
Orientation
- Unit-specific orientation includes:
- 1 day with educator/computer system training
- 1 day preceptorship on the unit
- Orientation covers 12-hour day shifts and weekends as scheduled
Additional Notes
- 50-mile radius rule applies for candidate submissions
- No cardiac drip titration required for RNs on this unit
