Description

Medical Surgical Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
  • Work Schedule: Will work every other weekend; if time off falls on a weekend, additional weekend shifts may be required to compensate
  • Patient Ratio: Must be willing to take up to a 1:7 patient ratio if needed (rare)
  • Floating: Will float within scope as needed
  • Block Scheduling: Not accommodated
  • Local Candidates: Accepted with no radius restrictions

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Illinois
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • PICC line management experience
  • Experience with starting IVs
  • Willingness to care for tracheostomy and laryngectomy patients (experience not required, but must be willing to learn)
  • Cerner experience preferred

Facility & Environment

  • Acute Care Hospital, Level I Trauma Center
  • Magnet designated facility
  • 562 staffed beds
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Scrub color: Any solid color allowed
  • Parking permit required, no cost

Additional Requirements & Compliance

  • Background checks including criminal, sex offender, and state-specific searches required within 30 days of start
  • Drug screening (9-panel) required within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within one year of start, confirming good health and ability to perform job functions
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • TB testing (2-step PPD, TSPOT, or Qgold) within one year of start; chest x-ray if positive test within past year
  • Competency exam required prior to start
  • Professional references: 2 required
  • Badge photo required before start
  • Completion of orientation safety manual and facility-specific modules required

Scheduling & Time Off

  • Only one winter holiday off allowed per contract, subject to manager approval
  • Time off requests reviewed based on unit schedule
  • Up to 36 hours of client call-offs allowed per 13-week assignment without penalty; additional cancellations billed

Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not required
  • On-call shifts are not required
  • Candidates must be willing to work with a diverse patient population including complex cases such as trach and laryngectomy patients

This position is ideal for a Med Surg RN with at least 2 years of experience, who is flexible with weekend work and patient ratios, and holds an active Illinois RN license.
