Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job in Oak Ridge, Tennessee
Position Details
- Job Title: Registered Nurse (Med/Surg Telemetry)
- Location: Oak Ridge, Tennessee
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Hours per Week: 36
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Work Schedule & Requirements
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (2 weekends per month)
- Float required; may use team nursing model with higher nurse-to-patient ratios
- Travelers requesting time off during specified holidays will not be accommodated (holidays include Valentine’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and several local breaks)
- Must pass EKG (Dysrhythmia) competency testing before start date (required for all Med/Surg nurses)
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – Must be current and uploaded as actual certificate (no screenshots/photos)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – Required for Telemetry/Med-Surg units; must be current and uploaded as actual certificate
- NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale Certification) – Required for all RN candidates; actual downloaded certificate required
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (verify with program management if unit description is blank):
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- CHEMO (Chemotherapy Certification)
- OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) – Preferred for ER, not required
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) – Required for L&D, OBGYN, Mother-Baby units
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) – Preferred for ER and Psych units
Required Competencies
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (minimum 80% score within 12 months)
- Core Competency Exams Part I, II, and III (minimum 80% pass rate, updated annually)
- Color Blind Testing (Ishihara test or equivalent within 12 months, 100% score required)
Licensure & Experience
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Tennessee
- Minimum of 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience, with experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- ACLS certification
- NIHSS certification
Health & Background Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, signed by MD, DO, NP, APRN, or PA confirming fitness for duty
- Negative TB test (QGold or Skin Test) within 1 year; chest x-ray if prior positive TB
- Drug screening within 45 days of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, fentanyl, marijuana, opiates, etc.)
- Flu vaccine required for all starts between September 1 and April 1; exemptions only for approved medical or religious reasons (declinations not accepted)
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer required
- Hepatitis B vaccine series, titer, or declination required
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer required
- Background check completed within 45 days of start, including 7-year work history, alias verification, and multiple criminal and abuse registries
- Two supervisory references from the past 3 years required
- Employment application with 7-year work history and no unexplained gaps over 30 days
Additional Documentation
- Valid driver’s license or state ID (color copy, current)
- Passport-style photo with solid background (no filters or facial piercings)
- Skills checklist specific to unit within last year, updated annually
- Onboarding attestation and job description acknowledgment required prior to start
- Utility bill or lease/mortgage statement with candidate’s name and address (if living more than 75 miles from facility)
Important Notes
- Travelers must comply with strict holiday time-off policies; holiday time-off requests are generally not approved
- All certifications and verifications must not expire within 45 days of assignment start date
- Screenshots or photos of certifications are not accepted; only actual downloaded certificates are valid
- Candidates must notify manager if color blind test score is less than 100%
- This position requires flexibility to float and work with team nursing models
