Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - CVICU (Cardiac ICU and Stepdown)

Location

  • City: New Haven, Connecticut

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit and Patient Population

  • Cardiac ICU and Stepdown Unit (Hybrid unit)
  • 8 cardiac ICU beds, 6 cardiac stepdown beds
  • Majority of ICU patients are Cardiothoracic Surgery pre- and post-op
  • Occasional Advanced Heart Failure patients
  • Stepdown includes Cardiothoracic Surgery, Peripheral Vascular, and Heart Failure patients
  • Daily nursing assignments vary between ICU and Stepdown
  • Floating within scope to stepdown unit as needed

Shift Details

  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM)
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Guaranteed hours

Nurse-to-Patient Ratio

  • Average ratio: 1 nurse to 3 patients

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 2 years of CVICU experience, with CVICU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Licensure and Certifications

  • Active Registered Nurse license required prior to start (pending license accepted if active by start date)

Additional Requirements

  • No on-call requirement
  • Must be willing to float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Return to Origin (RTO) restrictions: Absences greater than 7 days require approval

Compliance and Documentation

  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and sex offender search required
  • Education verification and foreign equivalency evaluation (if applicable)
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Drug screening (10-panel) within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months, updated annually (clean shaven required)
  • Immunizations and titers required or proof of immunity for:
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (or declination)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (highly preferred for certain specialties)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (required during flu season)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Various facility-specific training modules and attestations (e.g., Stroke Education, CAUTI, Suicide Risk, Fire Safety, Ventricular Assist Device Awareness, Patient Bedside Rounding, Blood Administration, Pyxis MedStation, eCart, Chaperone Policy)
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 12 months (minimum 85% score)
  • Color Blind Testing required (minimum 80% score)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for ICU and telemetry units
  • Language Services Training required
  • References: One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardiac ICU assignments (charge nurse references not accepted)
  • Employment history: 7 years with no gaps greater than 90 days; verification required
  • Skills checklist required within 12 months
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech roles (not applicable for RN)
