Registered Nurse – PCU/Oncology (Travel/Contract)
Location: Dayton, Ohio
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (4 shifts of 12 hours, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 48
Unit Overview
- 35-bed medical and radiation oncology unit specializing in oncology and hematology patients
- Mixed acuity: Medical-Surgical and Advanced Care patients
- Frequent care involving blood products, chemotherapy, drips, PCA pumps, wounds, and more
- Targeted patient ratios typically 1:4, can be up to 1:5-6
- Nurses with ONS Certification administer chemotherapy
- Navy blue scrubs required
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1.5 years nursing experience with some level 1 or 2 stepdown/PCU experience (ICU experience does not count)
- Oncology experience required
- Sickle cell experience and chemo certification preferred but not required
- Must have experience working with a 1:5 patient ratio in stepdown or PCU settings (must be clearly documented in work history)
- EPIC electronic health record experience required
- Must float to all Stepdown/Advanced Care units, including high-risk respiratory/COVID units
- Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays
Required Certifications & Competencies
- Current Ohio RN license (primary source verification required)
- BLS and ACLS certifications (must be able to read and interpret EKG strips)
- Pass an online EKG telemetry competency assessment before starting (with up to 3 attempts allowed)
- Fit testing for N95 respirator prior to working on the high-risk respiratory unit (PAPR may be offered if needed)
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam within 2 years
- Unit-specific competency exam within 2 years
- NIH Stroke Certification required unless working in L&D, Behavioral Health, Rehab, PACU, OR, Oncology, Infusion, or Med-Surg/Tele units
- Respiratory safety clearance within 1 year, renewed annually
- Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness to work and free of communicable diseases
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray and annual TB questionnaire if past positive
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
- Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen within 12 months, including marijuana panel (medical marijuana use not accepted)
Additional Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required
- E-Verify compliance required
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG required
- Fingerprinting not required for this unit
- Education verification and NURSYS verification required
- Two professional references within 2 years required (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge nurse) or employment verification if references unavailable
- Current resume/application required
- Skills checklist updated within 1 year required
- Must submit a completed medical questionnaire for respiratory protection prior to orientation
- Candidate agreement form must be fully completed prior to documentation due date
Floating & Scheduling Notes
- Floating assignments determined by employer discretion; may include main campus and nearby satellite campuses within 15 miles
- No block scheduling available
- Employer reserves the right to cancel shifts due to census with notice (up to 3 shifts for 13-week contracts)
- Travel experience preferred but not required
Important Application Notes
- Application must clearly show 1:5 ratio experience in stepdown or PCU in work history to be considered
- ICU experience does not substitute for stepdown/PCU experience
- Request for time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer
- RTO approval is at manager’s discretion
This position is ideal for experienced RNs with oncology and stepdown/PCU experience seeking a travel contract night shift role in a specialized oncology unit.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Ohio
- Oncology experience within the last year (minimum 1 year)
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS certification
