Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Oncology

Location: Aurora, Colorado
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Unit: Surgical Oncology (Medical-Surgical Oncology)
  • Setting: Teaching hospital surgical oncology unit
  • Patient Population: Patients with abdominal or pelvic cancers (Gynecologic Oncology, Colorectal, Pancreatic, Liver, Stomach) requiring surgical interventions
  • No chemotherapy or biotherapy administered on this unit
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:6, may flex based on staffing and unit needs
  • Charting system: Epic
  • Scrub color: Navy
  • Floating: Required within scope; may float to sister facilities as needed
  • Weekend shifts required per unit needs
  • Shifts: Rotating, 12-hour shifts (Day: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM; Night: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM), 36 hours/week total
  • Time off restrictions: Maximum 10 RTO days approved; no RTO allowed during specified blackout periods

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Colorado
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years oncology nursing experience, including surgical oncology
  • Oncology experience within the last year required
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association

Clinical Skills & Experience

  • Comfortable working with flexible nurse-to-patient ratios
  • Experience caring for post-operative oncology patients to achieve discharge milestones
  • No chemotherapy certification required

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID (clear copies front/back)
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Legal name change documentation if applicable
  • Background checks within 60 days of start, including 7-year history, SSN trace, Colorado CBI, education verification (accredited nursing school), sex offender search, OFAC sanctions, and others
  • Education verification or transcript/diploma acceptable
  • NURSYS verification for RN license within 60 days of start
  • Colorado CAPS check results within 60 days of start
  • Employment application and work history verification covering last 3 years, with explanations for gaps over 30 days
  • Two professional references from last two years, including one from the past year (charge RN, manager, or supervisor)
  • Annual skills checklist and oncology skills checklist required

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, DO, NP, or PA
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start, updated annually (3M 1860S, 1860R, 1870/1870+ masks accepted)
  • Immunizations/vaccinations or titers required:
    • TDAP within 10 years or signed declination
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, with annual TB questionnaire if positive
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive MMR IgG titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if titers negative/equivocal
    • Hepatitis B: Positive titer, vaccine series, or declination
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters if negative/equivocal
  • COVID-19 vaccination proof or signed declination required (acceptable vaccines: AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna)
  • Drug testing within 30 days of start and annually, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, buprenorphine, cocaine, methadone, methamphetamine, morphine, oxycodone)
  • Color blindness testing: Ishihara exam required prior to start (online testing not accepted for new candidates)

Competency Requirements (Must be current within 1 year)

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (for Med/Surg and ICU-related units)
  • Core competency exams Part I, II, and III
  • OSHA mandatory training exam

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must confirm renewal plans for any certifications expiring within 90 days of assignment start
  • Facility-specific new employee orientation modules must be completed within the first two weeks of assignment
  • Candidates should be comfortable with floating to similar units or sister facilities as needed

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized surgical oncology unit within a teaching hospital environment, providing care to complex post-operative cancer patients. The role requires strong acute care experience, flexibility with staffing ratios, and adherence to comprehensive compliance and health requirements.
