Description
Surgical First Assist (SFA) - West Virginia
Job Details
- Location: Ranson, West Virginia
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Days
- Hours: 4 shifts per week, 10 hours per shift (6:45 AM – 5:15 PM)
- Call:
- Approximately 3-4 call shifts per month
- Weekend call rotation about 1 weekend every 6-7 weeks
- Call response time: 30 minutes, must be dressed and ready to work
- Call is generally light and rarely extends past 7 PM
- Orientation: 3 shifts with a preceptor in the department after general hospital orientation
- Scrubs: Provided
Unit and Work Environment
- Operating Room with 4 rooms: 3 OR suites and 1 procedure room
- PreOp area shared by all rooms
- Average cases per day vary:
- Tuesday/Thursday: 20-22 cases
- Monday/Wednesday/Friday: 6-14 cases
- The OR is open Monday through Friday, closed on holidays and weekends except for call coverage
Common Procedures
- Total joint surgeries (hips, knees, shoulders) including use of ROSA robot
- Sports medicine procedures, arthroscopies
- Non-complicated fractures, IM nails, ORIF of ankles and wrists
- ACL repairs, carpal tunnel release with micro-knife
- Ophthalmology cases including cataracts
- General surgery: bowel resections, EGDs, gallbladder, appendectomies, breast biopsies, mastectomies
- Obstetrics/Gynecology: C-sections, hysterectomies (usually outpatient)
- Urology: kidney stones
- Plastic surgery: breast reductions/implants, hand surgery, lacerations, dog bites
- ENT cases every other month (tonsils, sinuses, tubes)
- No complicated fractures; these are referred to higher trauma centers
Required Qualifications
- Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) certification via NBSTSA
- First Assist Technician with at least 1 year of experience, including experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Experience with DaVinci robotic surgery
- Strong experience with total joint surgeries
- Experience as an Endoscopy Technician
- Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician, including ophthalmology cases
Additional Information
- Floating is generally not required for travelers but may be allowed within scope (e.g., vaccine clinic)
- Dress code: scrubs provided by the facility
This position is ideal for experienced Surgical First Assistants with strong orthopedic and robotic surgery skills seeking a 13-week contract with day shifts and manageable call responsibilities.
