Registered Nurse (RN) – Observation Unit

Location: South Charleston, West Virginia
Unit: 3 Pavilion / 3 T - Pulmonary & Observation
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (12-hour shifts, 6:45 am – 7:15 pm)
Hours per Week: 36

Unit Details

• 32 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6
• Patient population: Adult and geriatric with respiratory diagnoses and various medical conditions
• Trachs cared for by RN (not ventilated; on trach collar or room air)
• Respiratory therapy equipment includes CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow O2, IV pumps, sequential compression devices, pulse oximetry, specialty beds
• Monitor techs available 24/7; RNs review cardiac strips each shift
• Charge nurse role may be assigned to traveler if interested and cross-trained
• Nurse aide coverage: 7 am–7 pm (1:10 ratio), 7 pm–7 am (1:15 ratio)

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in West Virginia
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• BLS and ACLS certifications
• Minimum of 2 years telemetry experience, including telemetry experience within the last year
• One completed travel nursing assignment

Scheduling & Work Environment

• Block scheduling allowed with unit needs prioritized
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend on a set rotation
• Holiday scheduling rotates with core staff; preferences considered after initial period
• Floating required when not needed on unit; may float to Med-Surg units or Emergency Department to care for boarded patients
• Dress code: Navy scrubs for RNs/LPNs; solid colors only, no embroidery or patterns; closed-toe shoes required (no crocs)

Orientation

• General hospital orientation on first day
• Full day nursing orientation plus computer training
• Two 12-hour orientation shifts with a preceptor
• Initial skills checklist to be completed within 90 days

Additional Notes

• Charge nurse may have modified patient assignment (usually 2 patients)
• House supervisor coverage 24/7 on unit
• RN responsible for reviewing cardiac monitor strips each shift
