Job Opportunity: Step Down Registered Nurse

Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • 36-bed Step Down unit specializing in pre- and post-operative open heart management including CABG, valve, mitral clip, TAVR, thoracotomy, and lung cases (pneumothorax, hemothorax, chest tube, zephyr valve).
  • Care for advanced cardiac patients with continuous telemetry.
  • Targeted patient ratios: 1:4-6.
  • Uniform: Navy blue scrubs.

Shift Details

  • Night shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio.
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Required Certifications & Competencies

  • IV start certification.
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required within 12 months prior to start and updated annually).
  • Pass an online EKG telemetry competency assessment before starting (must be able to read and interpret cardiac strips).
  • Ability to titrate cardiac drips.
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam within 2 years.
  • Unit-specific competency exam within 2 years.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year or must be completed within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts allowed).
  • Respiratory protection medical clearance and N95 fit testing prior to starting on the high-risk respiratory unit (HRRU).

Floating & Other Requirements

  • Floating to other units within the health system may be required, including high-risk respiratory/COVID units.
  • Floating locations may include main campus and nearby satellite campuses within 15 miles.
  • The employer reserves the right to cancel shifts due to low census with notice.
  • Travelers are not eligible for employee incentives.

Health & Background Requirements

  • Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness for duty and free of communicable diseases.
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray with annual questionnaire if past positive.
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccination series, immune titer, or declination).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen within 12 months prior to documentation due date, including marijuana panel.
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG required.
  • Fingerprinting not required for this unit.

Documentation & Application Requirements

  • Current resume/application required.
  • Must include 1:5 Step Down or PCU patient ratio experience in work history section.
  • Two professional references within 2 years required (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge nurse). Employment verification accepted if references unavailable.
  • Skills checklist updated within 1 year.
  • Ohio licensure and NURSYS verification required.
  • E-Verify and government-issued photo ID required.
  • Candidate agreement and annual health questionnaire must be completed prior to documentation due date.

Additional Notes

  • Overtime for shifts over 48 hours is billed at 48 hours.
  • Request time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer. Approval at manager’s discretion.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with cardiac and telemetry patients.
