Job Summary
The First Assist Congenital Cardiac Nurse (RNFA) provides specialized surgical first-assist support during congenital cardiac procedures for pediatric and adult patients. This role involves working directly under the operating surgeon, requiring advanced knowledge and technical skills in congenital cardiac surgery, and collaboration with the surgical team to ensure exceptional patient care.
Required Qualifications
Education and Licensure
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maine
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of operating room experience
- At least 1 year of Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) First Assist experience within the last year
- Demonstrated proficiency in first assist surgical techniques
Key Responsibilities
Surgical First Assisting
- Serve as first assist to the surgeon during congenital cardiac surgeries, including tissue handling, wound closure, and hemostasis
- Utilize advanced surgical techniques tailored to surgeon preferences and patient needs
- Anticipate surgeon’s needs and optimize operating room efficiency and safety
Preoperative and Postoperative Care
- Collaborate in preoperative patient assessment and preparation
- Assist with postoperative wound management, monitor recovery, and provide patient education
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds to ensure continuity of care
Team Collaboration and Leadership
- Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and OR staff to ensure smooth surgical workflows
- Mentor and educate nursing staff on congenital cardiac procedures and assistive techniques
Work Schedule
- Approximately 48 hours per week
