CVICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Connecticut, New Haven

Position Overview

• Role: Registered Nurse (RN) in Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
• Location: New Haven, Connecticut
• Employment Type: Travel/Contract
• Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Guaranteed Hours: Yes
• Start Date: ASAP
• Patient Ratios: Average 1:2 during day and night shifts
• Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Level I Trauma Center
• Charting System: Epic

Required Experience & Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
• Minimum 3 years of Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) experience
• CVICU experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Certification in NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• Proficiency with Swan-Ganz catheter monitoring

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Background Checks:

  • 7-year criminal background check (updated annually)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Sex offender search
  • Education verification including foreign equivalency if applicable
• Health Documents:

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months, updated annually (clean shaven required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Immunizations or titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption during flu season
  • COVID vaccination series preferred
• References: One supervisor reference within the past year specific to Cardio Thoracic ICU (charge nurse references not accepted)
• Employment History: 7 years work history with no gaps greater than 90 days; verification required
• Skills Checklist: Required within 12 months of start
• Attestation of Prior Radiation Exposure: Required if applicable to certain units (not typically for CVICU)

Training & Competency Requirements

• Competency Exams:

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (minimum 85% passing score)
  • Color Blind Testing (minimum 80% passing score, required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024 onward)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for all ICU RNs
• Facility-Specific Training Modules (must be reviewed and attestation signed):

  • Language Services Training
  • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry)
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
  • Stroke Education (except Pediatric specialties and NICU)
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Modules
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health, Home Health)
  • New Employee Orientation Module
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RNs except Home Health)
  • ED Handbook (not applicable for CVICU)
  • eCart Training Module (not applicable for CVICU)
  • Chaperone Policy Training
  • Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026)

Additional Notes

• Floating: RN will float to other high-volume cardiac ICUs as needed.
• RTO (Return to Office) Restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval.
• Parking: Available at $125/month (for informational purposes only).
• High Acuity: This is a high acuity cardiac ICU requiring knowledgeable and experienced RNs.
