ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job – Durham, North Carolina
Position Details
- Job Title: ICU Registered Nurse
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Location: Durham, NC
- Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Hours per Week: 36
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Patient Population: Adults & Geriatrics
- Unit: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
- Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients
- Weekend Requirement: Approximately 6 weekend shifts per 8-week schedule (may vary based on staffing)
- Floating: May float to other adult inpatient areas depending on census and staffing
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) experience, including experience within the last year
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience working with adult or geriatric patients
- Willingness and ability to float to other adult inpatient areas as needed
- Availability for approximately 6 weekend shifts per 8-week schedule
Orientation & Uniform
- Orientation: Bi-weekly sessions
- Scrubs: Royal Blue
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Background Checks: Must be completed within 90 days of start, including multi-county and nationwide searches, sex offender, education verification (if applicable), and sanction lists
- Health Requirements:
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months (with specific documentation if history of positive TB)
- Required vaccinations: Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (every 10 years), Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination), Polio vaccine or attestation
- Seasonal flu vaccine required (no exemptions)
- Drug test: Negative 10-panel including THC within 30 days of start (instant tests not accepted)
- References: Two professional references from employment within the last 12 months, including at least one supervisor
- Employment Application: Required with 7 years of work history
- Skills Checklist: Must be updated annually
- Competency Exam: Unit-specific competency exam required
- Pass/Fail Testing: EKG/medication testing administered at orientation (passing score required)
- Duke Guest Account: Must be set up prior to clearance to access orientation and work systems
Additional Notes
- Candidates must complete all required online modules prior to orientation.
- Competency checklists (CBOs) must be completed within 3 weeks after start date.
- Candidates with less than a 30-day gap between previous assignments may have some documentation requirements waived or accepted on file.
- CPI training is provided onsite if candidate does not have current certification.
- Floating assignments depend on census and staffing needs.
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs with MICU background seeking a travel contract in a high-acuity adult and geriatric patient care setting on night shifts.
