Registered Nurse – Operating Room

Location: Durham, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Work in the Operating Room with exposure to multiple specialties including Neurology, Oral, ENT, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Bariatrics, Urology, Gynecology, Vascular, Robotics, Plastics, Dental, and Podiatry.
  • Utilize specialized equipment such as Intuitive DaVinci XI, Neptune, Electrical Surgical Unit, Smoke Free Cautery devices, Stryker Video Tower, Tourniquet, Cori Orthopedic Robot, and Olympus Endoscopy Tower.
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, three 12-hour day shifts (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM) with a rotating day off, plus on-call and weekend coverage as needed. Flexibility to switch to a later shift if required.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with EPIC electronic charting system.

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Orientation sessions held bi-weekly.
  • Candidate must set up a facility-specific Guest Account prior to clearance to access necessary systems for orientation and work.
  • Competency exams and unit-specific training required during orientation.
  • Scrubs are provided.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Valid driver’s license or government-issued photo ID.
  • Social Security card (if used for I9 verification).
  • Background checks including SSN trace, county checks for past 7 years, sex offender, nationwide, international (if applicable), education verification, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and OFAC sanctions list search.
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Immunizations and health requirements:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine every 10 years (no exemptions).
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months.
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella vaccination or positive antibody titers (no exemptions).
    • Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination.
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer.
    • Seasonal flu vaccine (required annually, no exemptions).
    • Polio vaccine or signed attestation.
  • Drug test: Negative 10-panel including THC within 30 days of start (no instant tests).
  • Two professional references from employment within the last 12 months, including at least one supervisor.
  • Employment application and skills checklist updated annually.
  • Pass/fail testing on EKG/medication knowledge administered at orientation (passing score 80%).

Additional Notes

  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Blue Card training may be required depending on unit.
  • Candidates must complete competency checklists within 3 weeks after start date.
  • Online orientation modules must be completed prior to starting.
  • Candidates with less than a 30-day gap between previous assignments may have some documentation requirements waived or accepted on file.

Shift Details

  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (total 36 hours/week).
  • Rotating day off, on-call, and weekend coverage as needed.

This position offers a dynamic surgical nursing experience with exposure to advanced technology and a variety of surgical specialties in a supportive environment.
