Job Opportunity: Step Down Registered Nurse

Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • 36-bed Step Down unit specializing in pre- and post-operative open heart management including CABG, valve, mitral clip, TAVR, thoracotomy, and lung cases (pneumothorax, hemothorax, chest tube, zephyr valve).
  • Care for advanced cardiac patients with continuous telemetry.
  • Targeted patient ratios: 1:4-6.
  • Navy blue scrubs required.

Work Schedule

  • Night shift: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each).
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio (primary source verification required).
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications (AHA only; must be current and valid).
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Required Certifications & Competencies

  • IV start competency.
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required within 12 months prior to start).
  • Ability to read and interpret EKG strips; must pass an online EKG telemetry competency assessment before starting.
  • Pass Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam within 1 year of start or complete attempts per remediation policy.
  • Must be fitted for N95 respirator prior to working on the High-Risk Respiratory Unit (HRRU) unless PAPR is provided/needed.
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 2 years of start.

Floating & Other Requirements

  • Floating is expected at the employer’s discretion, including to specialty clusters or high-risk respiratory/COVID units.
  • Floating locations may include main campus and nearby satellite campuses within 15 miles.
  • Employer reserves the right to cancel shifts due to low census with notice.
  • Travel nurses are not eligible for employee incentives.

Health & Background Requirements

  • Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness for work and freedom from communicable diseases.
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray; annual TB questionnaire if past positive.
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (vaccination series, immune titer, or declination).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen including marijuana panel within 12 months prior to documentation due date.
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG required.
  • Fingerprinting not required for this unit.

Documentation & Application Requirements

  • Current resume/application required with clear documentation of SD/PCU experience at a 1:5 ratio or better.
  • Two professional references within the last 2 years required; one must be a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse. Employment verification accepted if references are unavailable.
  • Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to documentation due date.
  • Government-issued photo ID required.
  • E-Verify compliance required prior to start.
  • Candidate agreement and annual health questionnaire must be completed prior to documentation due date.
  • Medical questionnaire for respiratory protection must be submitted prior to orientation.

Summary

This travel nursing contract is ideal for an RN with solid Step Down or Progressive Care Unit experience, strong cardiac post-op skills (especially CABG and valve cases), and proficiency with EPIC. Night shift availability and flexibility to float are required. Compliance with comprehensive health, background, and competency requirements is mandatory.


Note: Overtime for shifts over 48 hours is billed at 48 hours.
