Registered Nurse (RN) – Cardiac Stepdown Unit

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 48 hours

Unit Details

• 32 beds total: 22 stepdown beds and 10 floor beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Stepdown: 1:3
  • Floor: 1:5 or 1:6
• Clinical associates (nurse aides) support the unit; typically 2 overnight (1:16 ratio), budgeted for 4 (1:8 ratio)
• Dedicated charge nurse on shift; may take 1-3 patients depending on staffing
• Respiratory therapy equipment includes NC, CPAP, BiPAP, HFNC, trach to vent (dedicated RT on unit)
• Telemetry monitoring by Tele techs using Phillips monitors; RNs do not read their own strips

Patient Population & Care

• Common diagnoses: cardiology, heart failure, cardiac surgery, medical-surgical hospitalist patients
• RNs are required to titrate drips such as heparin, insulin, nitroglycerin, Cardizem, nicardipine, Lasix, amiodarone, and dobutamine

Scheduling & Work Requirements

• Self-scheduling allowed via Kronos; block scheduling flexibility available
• Weekend requirements (night shift):

  • 3-4 Saturdays and Sundays in a 4-week period
  • 2 Fridays and 2 Mondays in a 4-week period
  • Weekend nightshift requires every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
• Holiday coverage: one evening and one day shift during major holidays (e.g., Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s)
• No call or standby requirements
• Floating required: travelers are first to be pulled off the unit if needed, with rotational pull to floor assignment about 1 out of every 3 shifts

Orientation & Dress Code

• Unit-specific orientation: 48 hours per week
• Scrub color: royal blue

Required Certifications & Qualifications

• Current RN license
• BLS (AHA)
• ACLS (AHA)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Cardiac experience preferred
