Registered Nurse (Neuro Stepdown & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit)
Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Unit: Neuro Stepdown & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)
- Beds: 31 total (25 Stepdown, 6 EMU)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Stepdown: 1:3
- EMU Floor: 1:5-6
- Patient Types: Higher acuity neuroscience patients including stroke, seizures, craniotomies, EVDs (experience preferred), and post-TPA patients (managed by permanent staff)
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS and NIHSS certification required at time of submission
- ACLS preferred
- Strong neuro experience with history of caring for stroke patients and implementing NIHSS
- EPIC experience required
- Stepdown qualification mandatory for RNs on this unit
Clinical Responsibilities
- Titration of drips is generally by physician orders; some protocols may allow RN titration with education
- Common drips include: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Nipride, Ketamine, Lasix, Bumex, Insulin
- RN does not need ventilator experience; respiratory therapists manage vents and settings
- Telemetry monitoring present; RNs are not required to interpret strips
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse available 24/7
- Nurse aides present with ratios approximately 1:8-9 (4 aides per shift)
- Respiratory therapists available 24/7 for ventilator support
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Shifts: Nights, 3 shifts of 12 hours (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Weekend: Every other weekend or 2 weekend shifts per schedule
- Holidays: Participation in holiday rotation required
- Floating: Possible float to nearby units (7E, 7W, 7NE, or 10W)
- Orientation: 2 shifts on unit (12-hour day shifts), including weekends and holidays as scheduled
- Dress Code: Royal Blue scrubs
Additional Requirements & Notes
- COVID-19 vaccine required (2 doses Moderna/Pfizer or 1 dose J&J) unless approved exemption for medical or religious reasons
- Driver’s license address must be outside 50 miles from the facility
- Previous permanent candidates must have been gone for 2 years before reapplying
- Previous travelers must have been gone for 2 years after 1 full year on assignment
- Only 2 candidates submitted per opening; submissions held if position is full
- Any license issues must be disclosed at time of submission
Required Qualifications Summary
- Registered Nurse license
- BLS and NIHSS certifications (NIHSS must be current at submission)
- Strong neuro and stroke patient care experience
- EPIC electronic health record experience
- ACLS preferred but not mandatory
