Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg Unit

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Unit: 10 West MedSurg (Long Term Antibiotics)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Unit Size: 22 beds (all private rooms)
Patient Ratios: Typically 1:5 to 1:6
Charge Nurse Role: Yes; charge nurses may have 2-4 patients at times
Aide Support: Care Assistants available with ratios ranging from 1:7 to 1:22, assisting with vital signs, fingersticks, and activities of daily living (ADLs)

Patient Population & Care Focus

• Patients primarily with infections such as endocarditis, abscesses, septic arthritis, sepsis, osteomyelitis, diabetic foot infections
• Many patients have underlying substance use histories and may be actively using or withdrawing from substances
• Role involves managing complex behaviors related to substance use, including challenging or escalating situations

Clinical & Job Requirements

• Strong neurological nursing experience required
• Cardiac monitoring uses portable telemetry packs; nurses do not read or interpret strips
• Titration of drips is only done by physician orders in a step-down setting; some protocols may allow titration with education
• Orientation includes 1-2 shifts on the unit with a preceptor, plus standardized documentation for job duties, unit routines, and point-of-care testing validations

Required Certifications & Qualifications

• Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
• Registered Nurse (RN) license appropriate for West Virginia

Work Environment & Scheduling

• 12-hour night shifts
• Includes weekends and holidays as scheduled
• Must be comfortable working with patients who have substance use disorders and related behavioral challenges

Additional Notes

• This unit is not a step-down unit; step-down RN experience is not required
• No cardiac monitor technicians on site; nurses do not interpret telemetry strips
