Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work 3 twelve-hour shifts per week with call responsibilities.
- Call schedule typically includes 4 weekday calls and 1 weekend call (Saturday or Sunday) within a 4-week period.
- Weekend work is required.
- Must be able to independently circulate in cardiac surgery cases.
- First-time travel nurses are accepted.
- Locals are not accepted for this position.
- Pending license candidates are accepted.
- Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval.
- Guaranteed hours provided.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Connecticut.
- Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Facility & Work Environment
- Short Term Acute Care facility with Level I Trauma Center designation.
- Total staffed beds: 1,567.
- Electronic Health Record system: Epic.
- Scrub color provided.
- Parking available at a cost.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background Checks:
- 7-year criminal background check within 12 months of start, including SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, national criminal, federal extended, and education verification.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
- Education Verification: Highest level of education must be verified; foreign equivalency reports required for internationally educated candidates.
- References: One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU/CTICU assignments; charge nurse references not accepted. For other units, standard reference requirements apply.
- Work History: 7 years of work history with no gaps greater than 90 days; verification required.
- Skills Checklist: Required within 12 months of start.
- Physical Exam: Required within 12 months of start.
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start.
- Fit Mask Test: Required within 12 months of start and must be updated annually. Candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing.
- TB Testing: Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required; TB questionnaire must be updated annually.
- Immunizations:
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 MMR vaccines required.
- Varicella: Positive titer, 2 vaccines, or physician-documented history required.
- Hepatitis B: Positive titer, proof of vaccine series, or declination accepted.
- Tdap: Highly preferred for certain specialties but not required.
- Seasonal Flu Vaccination: Required during flu season (September 1 – March 31) with vaccine or medical/religious exemption. Declinations not allowed.
- COVID Vaccination: Preferred but not required.
Competency & Training Requirements
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam required within 12 months of start (minimum 85% passing score).
- Color Blind Testing required for all candidates starting on or after 8/2/2024 (minimum 80% passing score).
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for RNs in telemetry, MS/Tele, ER/ED, ICU, progressive care, stepdown, PACU, IR/Cath lab, labor and delivery units (not required for NICU, psych/behavioral health, pediatric, or ambulatory units).
- Language Services Training required.
- CAUTI Education Training required (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health).
- Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training required.
- Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module required except for ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, and NICU.
- Stroke Education required except for pediatric specialties and NICU.
- CLABSI Prevention Training required.
- Preventing Pressure Injury Training required.
- Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education required.
- Pyxis ES MedStation Training required.
- Baxter Pump Interoperability Training required.
- Patient Bedside Rounding Module required (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED).
- Ventricular Assist Device Awareness Training required.
- AME Blood Administration Module required except for Case Managers and Behavioral Health/Psych and Home Health; must be updated annually.
- New Employee Orientation Module must be completed by start date.
- 21st Century Cures Act Module required for RNs (except Home Health).
- ED Handbook required for ED/ER RNs.
- eCart Training Module required for most RNs (exceptions include Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health).
- Chaperone Policy Training required.
- Fire Safety Module required starting 5/4/2026.
Additional Notes
- Candidates must have photo ID matching legal name on first day.
- Foreign-educated candidates must provide foreign equivalency education evaluation and diploma.
- EPIC testing is encouraged for RNs with prior EPIC experience; onsite training provided if testing is not completed or passed.
- Medical exemptions for vaccines require facility approval.
- Candidates must complete all required attestations and training modules, often via electronic signature.
