Registered Nurse – PCU (Acute Leukemia and Hematology)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Overview
- Care primarily for newly diagnosed adult and geriatric acute leukemia patients.
- Unit focus includes infection prevention and patient falls prevention.
- Staffing ratio goal: 1:4 (may be 1:5).
- Schedule: 12-hour shifts, day or night (rotating possible). Self-scheduling requests accepted before finalizing.
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday-Friday day shifts
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; changes based on staffing needs.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least 1 year of PCU experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Skills and competencies:
- Central line blood draws.
- PICC line management.
Preferred Certifications
- Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Certification (not required).
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification (preferred).
Patient Population
- Adults and geriatrics with acute leukemia and hematology diagnoses.
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide search, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if applicable.
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required using specific Ohio codes; must be completed within 1 year of start.
- Education verification: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene).
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Immunizations and health documentation required:
- Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12).
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year; annual TB questionnaire.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low titer.
- Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions require documentation.
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable).
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31).
- Fit mask testing required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles (valid for entire assignment).
Additional Requirements
- 2 professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leader.
- Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start (with remediation process if failed).
- Unit-specific competency exams may be required.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
- Annual acknowledgment of orientation safety manual, dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
Schedule Details
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts, either days (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM) or nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
- Weekly hours: 36 hours (3 shifts per week).
- Weekend shifts variable based on unit needs.
Prior Travel Experience
- No explicit prior travel experience required. First-time travelers will be screened.
