Registered Nurse – PCU (Johnson City, Tennessee)
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Night (4 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 18:30 – 7:00)
- Hours per Week: 48
- Schedule Options: 36/36, 36/48, or 48/48 (no call)
- Floating: Required; 1:7 nurse-to-patient ratios when floated to Medical-Surgical units
- Orientation: 16 hours non-billable; general orientation begins on Sundays (online compliance training)
- Floating Notes: Hospital may cancel or call off one shift biweekly without penalty due to census changes; additional overtime shifts may be flexed accordingly
- Additional Responsibilities: Participation in nursing student support and clinical education alongside clinical care
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Tennessee
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with PCU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks within 30 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years, including:
- SSN Trace
- Nationwide criminal and sex offender registry
- Education verification
- Tennessee Adult Abuse Registry (if licensed/certified in TN or working in TN)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Primary source license verification and NURSYS verification required
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency as applicable
- Color blindness testing required (one-time)
- Photo for badge (must meet specific standards; submit within 48 hours of contract signing)
- Facility-specific forms and acknowledgments including dress code, contaminated sharps/body fluid exposure, smoking/tobacco use, influenza policy, respirator medical clearance, and facial hair guidelines for respirator use
- Physical exam required within 1 year of start (not annually)
- Respirator fit testing completed onsite (religious exemptions handled case-by-case)
- Immunizations and health screenings:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (vaccine or declination)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (2 PPDs within last 12 months or equivalent)
- MMR titers (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) with documentation of boosters if low immunity
- Varicella titer with documentation of boosters if low immunity
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or declination
- Seasonal flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption during flu season (Sept 29 – Mar 31)
- Drug screening: Standard 9-panel drug test within 14 days prior to start (instant test acceptable as placeholder)
- References: Minimum 2 preferred, 3 ideal

Additional Notes
- Traveler’s permanent residence must be at least 100 miles from the hospital’s service area
- Hospital may adjust shifts based on census without financial penalty
- Orientation includes online compliance and facility-specific training
- Active participation in clinical education for nursing students is expected as part of the role
This position offers a structured night shift schedule with floating responsibilities and a focus on cardiovascular and progressive care nursing within a travel contract framework.
