Medical Surgical Oncology Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work on a Med/Surg unit with a focus on hematology oncology patients.
- Hematology oncology experience preferred but not required; Med/Surg experience is required.
- Staffing ratios target 1:4, occasionally 1:5.
- Shift options: Day (3x12 hours, 7:00 AM–7:30 PM) or Night (3x12 hours, 7:00 PM–7:30 AM).
- Floating to other Med/Surg and Oncology units as needed.
- Orientation: First week Mon-Fri dayshift; second week includes 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
- Self-scheduling requests allowed; no set/blocked scheduling.
Patient Diagnoses
- Lymphoma
- Multiple Myeloma
- Acute and Chronic Leukemias
- Sickle Cell Disease
- Other non-hematologic cancers
- Benign hematology conditions
Special Procedures & Unit Details
- Chemotherapy administration
- Blood transfusions
- IV antibiotics
- Management of oncologic emergencies (tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome)
- Insulin and heparin drips
- Strong emphasis on infection prevention and patient fall prevention
Required Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification preferred but not required.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Med/Surg and Telemetry nursing skills
- Telemetry monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Feeding tube care and management
- IV therapy and phlebotomy
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws and peripheral line care/management
- PICC line management
- Starting IVs
- Computerized charting using EPIC
Required Licenses & Experience
- Valid Registered Nurse license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum of 1 year hematology/oncology experience within the last year
- Med/Surg experience
- Telemetry experience
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881).
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start.
- Annual compliance with facility-specific policies including dress code, hand hygiene, fraud/waste/abuse training, and ethics.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and freedom from contagious disease.
- Immunizations and health documentation required:
- Tdap (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (mask required if declined)
- Fit mask testing required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles (valid for entire assignment).
Additional Requirements
- Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
- Unit-specific competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG competency within 1 year of start.
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
Work Environment & Scheduling
- Variable weekend shifts based on unit needs.
- No blocked or set schedules; staff submit preferred schedules for balancing.
- Parking options available (costs not included here).
