Job Opportunity: ECMO Specialist (Registered Nurse)
Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work in a large volume pediatric and adult ECMO program, focusing on stable pediatric ECMO patients.
- Patient population includes congenital heart disease, congenital diaphragmatic hernias, and respiratory failure.
- Rotating day and night shifts (3x12 hour shifts):
- Day shift: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
- Night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Pediatric circuits: 1:1, occasionally 1:2
- Adult circuits: 1:3 with remote monitoring and rounding care model
- Weekend requirement: 2 weekends per 4-week scheduling period
- No call or float responsibilities
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan
- Minimum 1 year of ECMO ICU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Experience with Epic electronic medical record system
Health and Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Negative TB test (PPD, Qgold, or Tspot) within 1 year; if past positive, clear chest X-ray within 5 years and annual TB questionnaire required
- Fit mask test within 1 year (N95 or equivalent masks accepted)
- Immunizations or positive titers required for:
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (instant drug screens not accepted)
Orientation and Facility Requirements
- Pass/fail competency testing on EKG and medication administration required upon arrival
- Completion of facility-specific orientation paperwork on first day
- Review and sign confidentiality agreement, code of conduct, conflict of interest disclosure, sexual harassment and misconduct policy, and complete required online modules before starting
- Government-issued photo ID and state license verification required
- Background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG clearance required prior to start and updated annually
- ID badge and pager return policies enforced; failure to comply may result in fees

- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
- No call or float duties expected
- Flu shot is strictly required with no exemptions allowed
- This role involves working with critically ill pediatric ECMO patients in a high-acuity environment
This position is ideal for experienced ECMO specialist RNs seeking a travel contract in a high-volume pediatric ECMO program with rotating shifts and a strong emphasis on compliance and certification maintenance.
