Registered Nurse (RN) - Float / Med Surg / Telemetry / Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Stepdown (Nights)

Location: Waterloo, IA
Employment Type: Temporary
Shift: Nights
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Float nurse position with no home unit; primary assignment is Med Surg with required floating across Med Surg, Behavioral Health (BH), Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and some post-procedural areas based on census and staffing needs.
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:6 on a 130-bed unit.
  • Telemetry duties include reading EKG/ECG rhythm strips and dysrhythmia interpretation.
  • Experience with drips: heparin, insulin, lasix, amiodarone, diltiazem, digoxin.
  • Electronic Medical Record system used: EPIC.
  • Orientation required (16 hours).
  • Must work 1-2 of 3 upcoming summer holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day) unless the unit is closed.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Iowa.
  • Minimum 1 year of Critical Care Float experience within the last year.
  • Experience floating across multiple acute care settings including Med Surg, Telemetry, Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Stepdown, Behavioral Health (BH), Emergency Department (ED), and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
  • Ability to comfortably and confidently read EKG/ECG including rhythm strips and dysrhythmia interpretation.
  • Proficiency with drips including heparin, insulin, lasix, amiodarone, diltiazem, and digoxin.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by AHA or ARC.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience with EPIC Electronic Medical Record system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • De-Escalation Certificate (SAMA, MAB, MOAB, CPI) – can be obtained during onboarding.
  • NIH Stroke Scale certificate – can be obtained during onboarding.
  • Professional references or performance evaluations within the last 24 months.

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers accepted with at least 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in hospital or medical center settings.
  • Work history and resume must reflect the required 24 months of relevant experience.
  • Call-back and on-call opportunities available with additional compensation.
  • Overtime is billable after 40 hours per week.
  • Nurse will be contacted quickly via phone/text from a 405 area code; candidates must be located at least 50 miles away (radius rule).
  • Employee separation policy restricts certain past employees from working travel contracts in this market.
