Job Opportunity: PCU Float Registered Nurse

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Float Pool during day shifts (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM).
  • May be required to float to another nearby hospital (5–6 minute walk) or within units of equivalent or lower acuity.
  • Estimated patient ratio: 1 nurse to 3-4 patients.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • IV start capability.
  • Telemetry (TELE) experience required.
  • Experience with Epic electronic medical record system.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881).
  • Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending results allowed).
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Required immunizations and health documents:
    • Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation)
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • Fit mask test required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles (valid for entire assignment).

Competency and Testing Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exam required.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 1 year of start (with remediation process if failed).
  • NIH Stroke Certification may be required depending on unit assignment (must be obtained within 1 year of start and renewed every 2 years).

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
  • Employment application required, including education details.
  • Skills checklist required.
  • Annual acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.

Work Environment and Other Details

  • Parking permits available for purchase (costs vary; not included here).
  • 24/7 access to hospital facilities and parking garages depending on permit type.
  • Facility requires adherence to specific fingerprinting and background check processes with strict timelines.

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with telemetry skills and EPIC experience who are comfortable floating between units and nearby hospitals within a large healthcare system.
