Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)
Location: Johnson City, Tennessee
Shift: Night (4 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 18:30–7:00)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Patient ratio: 1:7
- Schedule options: 36/36, 36/48, or 48/48 (hours on/off rotations)
- No on-call required
- Floating to other units required
- Hospital may cancel one shift biweekly without penalty due to census changes
- Additional shifts beyond commitment are overtime and may be flexed based on census
- Expected to participate in nursing student support and clinical education alongside clinical care
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Tennessee
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Orientation & Compliance
- General orientation begins on Sundays; includes 16 hours of non-billable orientation (online CBLs on Sunday)
- Traveler’s permanent residence must be at least 100 miles from the hospital’s service area
Required Certifications & Competencies
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA Instructor or Provider or RQI accepted (verify unit-specific requirements)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA Instructor or Provider or RQI accepted
- NIH Stroke Certification (verify if required/preferred for unit)
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Color Blind Testing (one-time requirement)
- Competency exam required
Background & Health Requirements
- Background check within 30 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Education verification required
- Tennessee Adult Abuse Registry check required for TN licensed/certified candidates
- Drug screen (9-panel) within 14 days of start (instant acceptable as placeholder)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility policy (2 PPDs within last 12 months or QGold/TSPOT within 3 months)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (not required by facility but required by agency)
- Immunizations/vaccinations required:
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) titer or documentation of boosters
- Varicella titer or documentation of boosters
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or declination
- Seasonal flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Sept 29 – Mar 31) with facility-specific documentation and approval
Facility-Specific Requirements
- Photo for badge must meet strict standards (neutral background, no filters, no visible facial piercings/tattoos, neutral hair color) and be submitted within 48 hours of contract signing
- Completion of multiple facility-specific forms including:
- Staff info form (time sensitive, within 24 hours of contract)
- Department-specific uniform guidelines and dress code review
- Contaminated sharps and body fluid exposure statement (Hep C titer required if exposure history indicated)
- Smoking and tobacco use policy review
- Influenza policy review and exemption forms if applicable
- Respirator medical evaluation questionnaire (time sensitive, within 48 hours of contract)
- Respiratory medical clearance form
- CDC facial hair guidelines for respirator use review
- Respirator fit testing completed onsite; no outside fit tests accepted
- Candidates must comply with CDC facial hair guidelines for respirator use during assignment

This position offers a structured night shift schedule with no call responsibilities, floating duties, and involvement in clinical education. It is suitable for RNs with at least 2 years of experience, including first-time travel nurses. Compliance with extensive background, health, and facility-specific requirements is mandatory.
