Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg Infectious Disease Unit
Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- 18-bed unit with all private rooms due to Infectious Diseases
- Patient types include Infectious Disease, Isolation cases, COVID, MRSA, C-Diff, etc.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- 1:5-6 typically
- 1:4 if COVID positive
- Staffing: 3-4 RNs per shift, plus 2 CNAs per shift
- No ventilators on unit; patients may be on CPAP, BiPAP, or High Flow managed by Respiratory Therapy
- Remote telemetry monitoring from another floor; RNs do not interpret cardiac strips
- Charge Nurse coverage 24/7; night charge nurse always takes a full patient assignment
Schedule & Shifts
- 12-hour shifts:
- Days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- Nights: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- 30-minute lunch break included
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Night weekends: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Day weekends: Saturday, Sunday
- Holiday shifts assigned based on unit staffing needs; travelers may be expected to work holidays
- Travelers scheduled as needed; block scheduling possible if unit needs are met
Job Responsibilities & Skills
- Strong knowledge required in Medical-Surgical nursing, Infectious Disease, and Isolation precautions
- No cardiac drip titration required
- Common IV drips include Heparin and typical MedSurg medications such as antibiotics
- Floating required primarily to MedSurg units; if floated to Telemetry, assignments will be within skillset
- Travelers are first to float
Orientation
- 1 day EPIC electronic health record orientation
- 1 day floor orientation with preceptor
- 3rd day working independently
Dress Code
- Royal blue scrubs required
- Scrub jackets allowed only if royal blue scrub jackets (no hoodies or sweatshirts)
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current RN license for West Virginia
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- Must submit an unexpired driver’s license with application
Additional Notes
- Call or standby requirements vary by contract; discuss specifics with recruiter if needed
- Unit typically staffed with 3-4 RNs per shift and 2 CNAs
- No ventilator management required by RN; respiratory therapy manages CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow devices
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of experience in Medical-Surgical nursing with strong Infectious Disease and Isolation precautions knowledge
- Prior travel experience not explicitly required for this position
