Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse
Location: Hays, Kansas
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 6 weeks
Position Details
- Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Shift: Day shift, 4 shifts of 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
- Weekly Hours: 48 hours
- Patient Ratios: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
- Weekend rotation required
- Floating within scope of practice to meet facility needs is expected
- Block scheduling limited to no more than 3 or 4 consecutive shifts
- Local candidates within a 60-mile radius are accepted
- No on-call requirement
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Kansas
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year nursing experience including IV start proficiency
- Certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Experience with MEDITECH electronic charting system

- Acute Care Hospital with Level 3 Trauma designation
- Total staffed beds: 149
- Scrub color: Any color allowed (OR/L&D/Cath Lab scrubs provided)

Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID must be carried during work hours
- Social Security Card or number required
- Proof of E-Verify or attestation required
- Background check: 7-year criminal history check within one year of start, updated annually; includes verification of education and all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals
- Education verification of highest degree earned required
- State license primary source verification and NURSYS verification required
- Pass/fail competency testing (including EKG and medication) during orientation
- Orientation includes completion of facility-specific safety and competency modules
Health and Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within the last 12 months (not required annually)
- Current Tdap vaccine within the last 10 years (vaccine record, titer, or approved exemption accepted)
- Negative Quantiferon Gold TB test within 1 year of start, updated annually; if positive, negative chest X-ray required within 2 years and annual facility TB questionnaire
- Required vaccinations or documented immunity for:
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B
- Varicella
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31)
- Negative 13-panel drug test within 30 days of start (instant tests not accepted)
References and Work History
- Two professional references required within 2 years for travel nursing positions
- Performance evaluations required if previously employed at the facility for over 1 year
Additional Notes
- No block scheduling greater than 3 or 4 shifts
- Any requested time off (RTO) must be approved and documented before assignment start
- Orientation held on-site; business casual attire recommended (scrubs allowed if required for position)
- Lactation resources available upon request
