Registered Nurse – Emergency Department (ED)
Location: Portland, Oregon
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
- Role involves assessing patient needs, planning and coordinating interventions and consultations in the Emergency Department.
- Procedures include moderate and deep sedation, ultrasound, intubation, cardioversion, D&Cs, sexual assault exams, CPR, and imminent deliveries.
- Patient population includes trauma, acute stroke, STEMI, psychosis/psychological emergencies, sepsis, and patients with complex medical or substance abuse histories.
- Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-4.
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (Evening: 1:00 PM – 7:30 PM; Night: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
- Weekend work required.
- Floating within the hospital required; no floating to sister hospitals.
- Block scheduling generally not accommodated.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Oregon (pending licenses accepted if application is submitted and received by the licensing board)
- Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- At least 1 year of total travel nursing experience
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
- Trauma nursing experience
- Certifications:
- ACLS (American Heart Association provider)
- BLS (American Heart Association provider)
- PALS (American Heart Association provider)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Compliance and Onboarding Requirements
- Background check within 6 months prior to start, including education and work history verification, international searches if applicable, sex offender search, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG checks.
- Two (2) manager or supervisor references from the last 24 months required; exceptions apply with documented attempts.
- Employment application must include at least 7 years of work history with city and state for each position.
- Facility-specific professional appearance policy and job description must be reviewed and signed prior to start.
- Completion of required online training modules (Compass modules) prior to start, including:
- Information Privacy and Security Essentials
- Integrity Foundations
- Harassment Prevention Fundamentals
- Glucometer 2026 (exemptions apply)
- Omnicell Nurse Patient Care Training (exemptions apply)
- Vocera Badge Training (for inpatient RNs)
- Medication override test provided for orientation (not required before start).
- Respirator fit testing required within one year prior to start; must be completed through agency or prior to arrival.
Health and Safety Requirements
- Negative 10-panel drug screen including methamphetamines within 3 months prior to start; laboratory-based and SAMHSA certified.
- Immunizations and titers required or signed declinations for:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (full series or declination)
- Varicella
- Negative TB test (2-step PPD, TSPOT, or QGOLD) within 12 months prior to start; chest x-ray and annual questionnaire required if positive history.
- Annual flu vaccination or signed declination required by December 1, 2026.
- Physical exam required to meet agency standards (within 1 year of start).
Additional Information
- Valid government-issued photo ID required on first day to obtain facility ID badge.
- Candidates must be fully available for compliance needs up until start date; planned absences must be communicated in advance.
- Parking cost approximately $16 daily.
- Scrubs provided for OR but not required for ED.
- No call requirements.
- Return-to-Office restrictions: maximum 1 week.
