Pediatric Stepdown Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Pediatric Stepdown unit nurse with an average patient ratio of 1:4
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Floating within scope of practice to meet facility needs
- Block scheduling accommodations available
- Pending license accepted if active prior to start date
- Locals not accepted
- Guaranteed hours
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Connecticut
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Pediatric PCU - Progressive Care Unit, with at least some experience within the last year
- Stepdown unit experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (required)
- ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI, NIH Stroke Certification, and other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment—verify unit-specific requirements
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (must score 85%) within 12 months of start
- Color Blind Testing (required for all candidates starting on or after 8/2/2024; must score 80%)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for certain units (not required for Pediatric units)
- Additional facility-specific training modules and attestations required (see Facility Specific Training)

Candidates must complete and sign attestations for the following (unless otherwise noted):
- Language Services Training
- CAUTI Education Training (not required for PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
- Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
- Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (not required for ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
- Stroke Education (not required for Pediatric specialties and NICU)
- CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
- Preventing Pressure Injury Training
- Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
- Pyxis ES MedStation Modules
- Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
- Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
- Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (not required for Pediatric specialties)
- AME Blood Administration Module (not required for Behavioral Health, Case Managers, Home Health)
- New Employee Orientation Module
- 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
- ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
- eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
- Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap of 6+ months between assignments or module updated)
- Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026 and forward)
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical Exam within 12 months of start
- Fit Mask Test within 12 months of start; must be clean-shaven for testing; updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation (T-Spot or QGold within 6 months, or 2 PPDs within 12 months)
- TB Questionnaire (updated annually)
- Immunizations or positive titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (positive titer, vaccine series, or declination within 1 year)
- Tdap vaccination highly preferred for Pediatric specialties (declination accepted)
- 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months of start (rapid accepted)
- Seasonal Flu Vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 – 3/31); declinations not allowed
- COVID vaccine series preferred but not required
Background & Employment History
- 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days required
- Verification of last 7 years of employment required (attestations not accepted)
- One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU only; otherwise, follow standard reference requirements
- 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start, including:
- SSN Trace
- Counties Lived/Worked
- Statewide and National Criminal Checks
- National Sex Offender Registry
- Federal Extended Checks
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Foreign Equivalency Education Evaluation required for internationally educated candidates
- Education verification of highest level completed required; official transcripts may be requested if third-party verification unavailable
Additional Notes
- Candidate must provide photo ID matching legal name on first day
- On-call is not required
- Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval
- EPIC charting system used (optional EPIC testing available for experienced ER RNs)
- Candidates must complete various facility-specific training modules and attestations, often via electronic signature
- Floating within scope of practice expected to meet facility needs
This position offers an opportunity to work in a large, Level I Trauma Center with a short-term acute care focus, using Epic for charting. The role requires night shifts with a 1:4 patient ratio in a pediatric stepdown setting.
