PCU
Overview
- Travel/Contract role in Winston Salem, North Carolina.
- 13-week assignment.
- Night shift: 4x12 hours, 18:45–7:15.
- 48 hours per week.
- 1:3–4 target ratio.
- Accepts 1st time travelers.
- Locals are accepted.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina.
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
- PCU - Progressive Care Unit (2 years of experience).
- PCU - Progressive Care Unit experience within the last year.
- ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- BLS - Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- NIHSS.
- Experience with arterial lines and titrating vasoactive drips.
- Experience with interpretation of dysrhythmias.
- Experience with management of dysrhythmias.
- Experience with use of Rapid Response Teams.
- Experience with IV insulin protocols.
- Experience with blood product administration.
- Experience with central line care and management.
- Experience with PICC line management.
- Experience with heparin protocols.
- Experience with CVA care.
- Experience with chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy management, and isolation precautions.
- Experience with IV start and conscious sedation.
- Must pass EKG Testing prior to start.

Unit Details
- ICU stepdown unit.
- Runs more like an ICU.
- 20 beds.
- Floating required as needed to a sister ICCU unit.
- Every other weekend required.
- No block scheduling.
- Only one pressor drip per patient on the unit; additional pressors require transfer to ICU.
- Bedside telemetry monitors with remote backup.
- No vents on the unit.
Patient Population
- Post rapid response team patients.
- Respiratory distress.
- Unstable hemodynamics.
- Withdrawal.
- GI bleeds.
- Post-op GYN, GU, GI, thoracotomies, neuro, and ortho surgeries.
- Pre/post OB with complications (Pitocin).
- Adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Additional Notes
- RTO after booking is not allowed.
- Any call offs or additional RTO on unit could possibly turn into a cancel and DNR.
- Hospital orientation is during week one, and the traveler must be available for classes each day.
- Scrubs: navy, white, or a combination of the two.
