MedSurg/Tele Float Pool RN
Overview
- Role: RN (Registered Nurse)
- Specialty: MedSurg/Tele Float Pool

- Shift: Nights
- Schedule: 12-hour shifts, 7p–7a
- Hours per week: 36
Unit / Float Scope
- Unit/Department: MedSurg/Tele Float Pool
- Most frequent float units: 6N (36 beds) and 7N (29 beds)
- Other possible float units: 4N (36 beds), 5S (36 beds), 6S (36 beds), and Critical Care (20 beds)
- Assignment process: Report to the clinical coordinator’s office before shift start for unit assignment
- Typical assignment pattern: May be assigned a parent unit and basic telemetry patients within scope of practice
Required Qualifications
- Certifications: BLS and ACLS
- Skills: Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips
- Assessment: Must take and pass a cardiac rhythm exam
- License / documentation: Unexpired driver’s license copy must be included with submission
Schedule Requirements
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend, Saturday/Sunday
- Holiday requirement: Works in the holiday rotation with permanent staff
Unit Details
- Patient ratios: Mainly 1:5–6 on days and nights; occasionally up to 1:7 toward the end of a shift depending on acuity
- Common patient types: CHF, cardiac cath, CP, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, ortho, and oncology
- Respiratory equipment: CPAP and BiPAP only; managed by RT
- Telemetry: Phillips monitors; most units have monitor techs
- Drips: No drip titration required
- CNA support: CNAs are used on all units
- Charge nurse: Every unit has a charge nurse; day charge does not take patients, night charge does
- Orientation: 1–2 shifts with a preceptor
- Dress code: Royal Blue
