Registered Nurse - Behavioral Health

Role Overview

• Unit RNs provide professional nursing services to individuals diagnosed with mental illness.
• Duties include nursing interventions and documentation, medication administration, maintaining inventory standards for medicine, controlled drugs, and narcotics, health teaching and counseling, addressing patient needs and concerns, completing admissions, discharges, and transfers, and maintaining a safe and secure therapeutic environment.
• RNs also participate in staff education, maintaining infection control standards, and functioning as a member of a treatment team.
• The position will fill in for other staff, so the schedule will vary.

Schedule and Duration

• Contract length: Up to 2 years
• Shifts: Generally 6:50 AM-3:50 PM, 3:50 PM-11:50 PM, and 11:50 PM-7:50 AM; a 12-hour shift is available at times
• Hours: 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse license and current registration to practice nursing in New York State
• Certifications (American Heart Association or American Red Cross only): ACLS, BLS, and PALS
• Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (required for RNs)
• Competency Exam (required for all candidates)
• Two references

Health and Background Requirements

• Physical exam: Required within 1 year of start; no annual renewal required
• TB: Negative QuantiFERON-Gold, T-SPOT, or two-step PPD within 12 months prior to start; the client does not require annual updates. An annual TB questionnaire is required in place of an annual TB test.
• Immunizations: Measles (Rubeola), mumps, rubella, and varicella require vaccination documentation or titers; hepatitis B requires vaccination documentation, titers, or declination
• Flu vaccine: 2026-27 seasonal vaccine or declination
• Drug testing: 9-panel within 1 year of start; instant tests are acceptable; no annual renewal required
• Background check: Covers the last 7 years of locations lived, worked, or attended school; completed within 1 year of start and updated annually. Searches include SSN trace, county, nationwide, and sex offender.
• Fingerprinting: Criminal background check fingerprinting is required and is completed onsite, except for Disability Office Facilities (all), Bronx Day Program, and Manhattan Day Program, where it is processed through the staffing vendor.
• Medicaid enrollment: Required at certain facilities, including submission of an NPI number for some
