Job Summary
Operating Room Open Heart Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist Glendale, AZ. This role selects and places surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during open-heart procedures, scrubbing and providing sterile items throughout surgery. The position also supports preparation for cases, maintains aseptic technique and universal precautions, assists with operating room turnover, and contributes to training and orientation for surgical technology staff and students. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.
Job Details
- Schedule: Days, 12-hour shifts; minimum 36 hours per week.
- Required Qualifications: High school diploma/GED; current Basic Life Support (BLS); certification as a surgical technologist; one to two years of experience in a surgical technologist role or three to four years in a surgical technologist role; registered with State Regulatory Agency where applicable; proficiency to scrub on a minimum of two surgical specialties; manual dexterity; ability to maintain professional decorum in highly stressful emergent situations; ability to be conscientious, organized, and orderly; ability to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient.
- Preferred Qualifications: Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
- Additional Information: Prepares for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments and supplies, ensuring instruments are in good working order, reviewing case carts for correct items, troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment and making minor adjustments or contacting biomedical equipment staff, and planning ahead for upcoming case needs. Anticipates surgeon needs by passing instruments and retracting tissue as appropriate. Maintains aseptic technique and universal precautions, disposes of sharps and waste, places used supplies into the case cart for processing, participates in sharps/instrument/sponges counts, and prepares instruments for cleaning following each case. Ensures surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate, assists with operating room turnover between cases, stocks and replenishes supplies, and supports cleaning of operating rooms. Participates in or leads training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students as assigned. Follows safety procedures related to medication labeling, appropriate handling of specimens, sharps, time-out procedures, radiation and laser safety, infection control, and instrument assembly/disassembly. Participates in emergency call rotation. May provide business support to the department, including administrative tasks.
