Job Summary
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Specialist Bangor, Maine. The healthcare provider in this role supports post-procedure patient recovery in a fast-paced environment that includes both outpatient and inpatient services, with 24/7 operating room coverage and a high daily patient volume. Responsibilities include post-anesthesia monitoring and coordination of care in alignment with unit protocols. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.
Job Details
- Schedule: Rotating shifts with 12 shift hours and a minimum of 36 hours per week; weekend rotation as many as every other or as few as once per month depending on census. Call coverage includes one call shift per week and one weekend per month, with weekend call from Friday evening to Monday morning at 5:30 AM, on call all weekend, and a 30-minute call back time.
- Required Qualifications:
- Certifications: Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Education/Training: Pre-op and/or PACU experience is required (minimum 23 years in a pre-op/PACU setting)
- Clinical/Operational requirements: Charting with Cerner; insulin drip management; electrolyte and heparin protocols; experience in pre-op working in cardiac induction bays in the operating room, including preparation of cardiac patients and assistance as needed to anesthesia
- Critical care requirement: Experience with ICU ventilator management/critical care infusions/drips

- Patient care may include cases across a range of simple to complex procedures requiring monitoring after MAC anesthesia through general anesthesia and spinals, with occasional ICU-level needs including ventilated/intubated patients.
- Patient ratio is reported as 1:12, following ASPN guidelines.
- Orientation includes 2 days of healthcare facility orientation and 2 days on the unit.
- Travelers will wear hospital scrubs.
- Daily staffing is listed as 11 in PACU (excluding Charge RN) and 9 in pre-op (excluding Charge RN), with typically 2 nurses working overnights.
