Job Summary: Certified Operating Room Tech (Certified OR Tech) Berkeley, CA
Certified Operating Room Tech provides perioperative support for patients undergoing surgical and endoscopic procedures, with the primary focus on the scrub person role. Responsibilities include preparing the operating room, providing competent scrub services for both minor and major procedures in multiple specialties, and completing postoperative sanitation and equipment care. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.
Job Details
- Schedule: 4/10-hour shifts (Monday through Friday) with variable start times; weekends as needed. On-call shifts required.
- Required Qualifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification; High school diploma or equivalent education/experience; completion of a diploma from an accredited surgical technology program or documented on-the-job training program; minimum two years recent acute care hospital experience in surgical technologist role; documented competency to scrub major procedures in at least three surgical specialties.
- Preferred Qualifications: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST); ophthalmology experience.
- Responsibilities:
- Assists with selecting supplies and equipment for surgical and endoscopic procedures and prepares the operating room for cases in collaboration with the circulating nurse.
- Secures instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for procedures; opens sterile packages using sterile technique.
- Provides scrub services for minor surgical procedures and competent scrub services for major procedures in at least three surgical services.
- Supports intraoperative activities including assisting the surgeon as directed (e.g., holding retractors/instruments, assisting with camera holding, sponging/suctioning operative sites, electrocautery application to clamps on bleeders, cutting suture material, assisting with staple closure, connecting drains to suction apparatus, and applying dressings).
- Assumes responsibility for care of specimens on the field and communicates accurate information to the circulator for documentation.
- Assists with transferring patients to postoperative bed/gurney and performs operating room sanitation tasks, including cleaning anesthesia machines and changing breathing circuits.
- Loads and operates ultrasonic washer, autoclave, and related sterilization units as needed.
- Serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one surgical service, including supporting maintenance of physician preference lists and maintaining specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Reports defective material/equipment and unsafe conditions through appropriate channels and supports orientation and in-services as assigned.
- Supports medication handling on the sterile field in cooperation with the registered nurse circulator and follows medication labeling and policy/procedure requirements under direct supervision.
- Submission Requirements: Uploaded Nursys within the last 2 weeks with a valid California state license; uploaded any applicable certifications with valid expiration dates; certifications must be Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) as applicable; two references obtained within the last year.
